If this result holds, the final match between Mexico and Uruguay would need only end in a draw to ensure the progress of both sides and to queue up the conspiracy theorists.

F. Rodríguez gets yellow.
Well, it may be a sooner end to the World Cup than even Domenech expected. His tenure as France manager is done at the conclusion of the tournament. Without some help in the last game, they'll likely be heading home.

Description

Penalty goal scored by C. Blanco for Mexico!
Goal Mexico! Blanco, the oldest player in the tournament, slots home beneath a diving Lloris. France's hopes looking more dim with every minute.
78'
E. Abidal gets yellow.
Penalty to Mexico! Barrera charges into the area and a late challenge by Eric Abidal hauls him down. Minimal contact, but enough to get the call.
77'
Corner kick for Mexico

The Mexican fans have managed to drown out the vuvuzelas. No small feat to be honest.

M. Valbuena enters the game and replaces S. Govou.
A sub coming for France as young Mathieu Valbuena is on for Govou. Valbuena scored on his debut in a friendly against Costa Rica just a couple of weeks ago, and France will look for some inspiration from the striker.
68'
France don't look much like scoring a goal. The Mexican defense is well organized and there isn't much innovation in the attack for Les Bleus at the moment.

J. Hernández has scored a goal for Mexico! Assist by R. Márquez.
Goal Mexico! The super sub Hernández breaks the deadlock. Perhaps a hint of offside in that one, but El Chicharito latches onto a fine throughball by Márquez before rounding the keeper and slotting into the open net.
63'
Long drive by Márquez from 35+ goes right into the arms of Lloris.

Straight swap of veteran attackers as Cuauhtémoc Blanco is on in place of Franco.

Thirty minutes to go now, and the defenses are still holding up rather well. Going to take some improvisation - or a stroke of luck - to break the deadlock.

The match is getting awfully chippy now. Al-Ghamdi's whistle is in no danger of gathering rust in this one.

Now a sub - the second one - for Mexico as Javier Hernández replaces Juárez. It's an attacking sub. We'll see what the Manchester United new boy can do.

Héctor Moreno now in the book for clattering over Malouda on the left touchline.
48'
E. Juárez gets yellow.
Tempers going off a bit at the moment. We'll see what happens here. The news is more bad news for Mexico as Efraín Juárez earns his second booking in as many games. He'll now miss out against Uruguay.
47'
Early free kick from 25 yards from Ribéry, but he crosses into the Mexican defense for an easy clearance.
46'
A. Gignac enters the game and replaces N. Anelka.
André-Pierre Gignac is half-time sub for France, replacing the rather ineffective Anelka.

Long cross by Ricardo Osorio never had much hope as Lloris had more than enough time to take it down.

The defending from both sides has been fairly solid thus far, but the Mexicans will be especially happy with their efforts thus far. The French have gotten very little look at Pérez in goal.

Gerardo Torrado decided to have a go from over 40 yards out. That didn't go so well as it's a present for someone in Row Q.
33'
Nearly a goal right off the bat for Barrera, but Lloris punches a great Salcido cross of his head and out for a goal kick.
32'
The sub is Pablo Barrera, who enjoyed a good spell this past year with Pumas.
31'
P. Barrera enters the game and replaces C. Vela.
Well bad news for Mexico is that it looks like Vela is going to be unable to continue in this game. Expect a substitution shortly.

Great move by Salcido to split two defenders en route to the area from the left, but his shot is parried away by Lloris.

Interesting little free kick move that gets Ribéry into the right side of the area, but his ball flashes back across the face of goal.
12'
Franco turns inside his marker nicely at the top of the area, but his right-footed shot just won't stay down to force Hugo Lloris into action.
11'
Good pace to the game thus far as both sides know they absolutely must win this game. Florent Malouda breaks into the area and pulls it back to center for Ribéry, but no one is home. Nicolas Anelka then ends the play with a long shot over the top.

The match is under way 0 - 0
There is much to play for on a Thursday evening in Polokwane as France and Mexico square off in a battle for three valuable points in World Cup Group A. After Uruguay's 3-0 thrashing of hosts South Africa yesterday, both France and Mexico - each on one point - will need a victory to keep pace and hold the upper hand in the quest for a Round of 16 berth. Despite rumors of squad changes on the French side, the only alteration is the insertion of Florent Malouda for Yoann Gourcuff. Likewise, Mexico manager Javier Aguirre only makes one change with Paul Aguilar giving way to Héctor Moreno.
