Alex Fisher at the Britannia Stadium: "Good afternoon from the Britannia Stadium where football purists are gathering for Stoke v West Ham, a proper blood and guts Premier League match and definitely not one for the feint hearted! There are only three points between these sides prior to kick off but West Ham’s poor away form, they have lost 9 out of 13, and Stoke’s impressive home form says the hosts are the favourites for this match."
Alex Fisher at the Britannia Stadium: "Stoke manager Tony Pulis is forced into two of the three changes he has made for today clash with West Ham; Robert Huth starts a three game ban today and Matthew Etherington is suffering with a back injury so Andy Wilkinson and Michael Kightly come into the side. Wilkinson’s addition to the side will mean Marc Wilson moves to the centre of defence alongside Ryan Shawcross. The only other change is a poisitive one as Cameron Jerome is given a start upfront alongside Peter Crouch, with Geoff Cameron the man to make way."
Alex Fisher at the Britannia Stadium: "The Hammers only make one change to the side that was beaten by Tottenham and it is a forced change after Kevin Nolan broke his toe in that defeat, Matt Taylor is the man Sam Allardyce has chosen to replace the midfielder."
Alex Fisher at the Britannia Stadium: "Half time here at the Britannia and the final action of the half sees West Ham take the lead through Jack Collison. Ricardo Vaz Te wriggles through a few challenges and plays a neat reverse pass in Collison, and the midfielder does the rest as he fires past Asmir Begovic. The visitors deserve their lead, just, but in truth it was a half of very little action."
The referee blows the half-time whistle after Jack Collison's goal brings an end to an uneventful half of which the dominant feature has been the large number of free kicks breaking up the game. Stoke started the game better and benefited from West Ham's disruptive loss of Joe Cole and Matt Taylor at the start of the half, but West Ham grew into the game and began to dominate possession in the run up to their deserved opener. Tony Pulis' rare use of two strikers in Cameron Jerome and Peter Crouch helped put pressure on their opponents in the opening to the half, but it left them short a man in midfield against West Ham's 4-5-1, and he will have to find a way to turn the match around at the break.
West Ham collect a win to end their poor run of form as Sam Allardyce's side are rewarded for their ambition despite losing two players to injury in the early stages. After Stoke had the better of the opening few minutes with their two strikers bringing aerial pressure on the Hammers' defence, the East London side grew stronger as the half went on and went ahead after a neat pass from substitute Ricardo Vaz Te found the composed Jack Collison who finished past keeper Asmir Begovic. James Collins had already come close to heading his side into the lead and Andy Carroll did likewise, and the Potters struggled and appeared short of inspiration. Tony Pulis' side ramped up the pressure in the closing stages of the match but could not find a way through to equalise, with James Collins and Winston Reid expertly repelling the aerial threat posed by the giant strike force and Ricardo Vaz Te's pace and dribbling ability a good outlet for his side. Despite Charlie Adam going close with a stunning late strike, the Hammers deservedly held on for the win and now level with Stoke in mid-table on 33 points.
Alex Fisher at the Britannia Stadium: "Full time here at the Britannia Stadium and West Ham have pulled off something of a shock given they have not won on their travels since November and Stoke have only lost here once before today. Jack Collison's goal at the end of the first half was the difference, the midfielder calmly firing past Asmir Begovic after being found by Ricardo Vaz Te. The Hammers were resilient and survived a late scare as Charlie Adam struck the bar to secure the win."
