Almost a third as Adriano has a golden opportunity but he sidefoots wide under no pressure at the near post.
90' +2
Into five minutes of stoppage time and the game is pretty much up for the hosts. Lucescu's gameplan has worked to perfection since the break.
90'
More trouble as Granero goes down with nobody near him and needs a stretcher. Shakhtar have no more substitutions so they will end this game with ten men.
89'
They may have only had two real chances, but Shakhtar have certainly made the most of them. Sociedad will feel aggrieved after dominating much of the play but their finishing wasn't quite good enough.
87'
Fred enters the game and replaces Fernando.
Alex Teixeira has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk! Assist by T. Stepanenko.
Fernando, after his booking, is replaced by Fred for his European debut.
GOAL SHAKHTAR!!! Three points all but secured for the Ukranians and it's that man Teixera again. He runs at the Sociedad defence before cutting inside onto his right foot and firing into the bottom corner. Questionable defending but superb forward play.
85'
Iñigo Martínez gets yellow.
Granero gets to the byline and tries to pull it back towards the strikers. Pyatov does well though to punch it away under pressure from Martinez. The goalkeeper looks hurt as Martinez is rather harshly booked for the foul.
83'
Fernando gets yellow.
Yellow card for Fernando for pulling back Granero. Shakhtar's fifth of the evening.
81'
Bergara gets yellow.
Granero enters the game and replaces Rubén Pardo.
Bergara is booked for trying to get the referee to book Adriano. Good officiating.
Granero replaces Pardo in midfield as Sociedad continue their quest for a goal that their play would deserve.
80'
Fernando, who has been fairly quiet this evening, tries to double Shakhtar's lead but his low effort from 20 yards is straight at Bravo.
79'
Entering the final ten minutes here and Sociedad are pressing. No way through as yet.
Minute
Description
77'
Bernard enters the game and replaces Douglas Costa.
So close for Sociedad as they push for an equaliser. A free-kick is whipped in from the right and Vela's header has Pyatov beaten. It is just too high though as it bounces back off the crossbar and the waiting strikers cannot capitalise.
76'
Second change for the visitors as Bernard replaces Douglas Costa.
74'
G. Castro enters the game and replaces A. Griezmann.
A good round of applause for Griezmann has he is replaced by Castro. Very encouraging performance from the French forward.
73'
Almost a huge slice of luck for the hosts as De la Bella's cross has Pyatov backtracking. The goalkeeper originally thinks it is floating over, but in the end he has to touch it onto the crossbar to deny the left-back an unlikely goal.
72'
Ball in the net for Sociedad but again the linesman rules it out. Griezmann breaks through before rounding Pyatov and finishing but he just went too early.
71'
Sociedad still look like they are amazed they have found themselves behind. To Shakhtar's credit they have defended excellently since the break and are now looking comfortable.
69'
Agirretxe enters the game and replaces H. Seferović.
First change for the hosts as Seferovic makes way for Agirretxe up front.
68'
Douglas Costa has picked up a booking, though in truth I'm not 100 percent sure what it was for!
66'
Douglas Costa gets yellow.
T. Stepanenko enters the game and replaces T. Hübschman.
Shakhtar also make a change now as Hubschmann is replaced by Stepanenko.
65'
Alex Teixeira has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk! Assist by Douglas Costa.
GOAL SHAKHTAR!!! Well this is truly against the run of play so far. Srna finally finds a teammate in the box, and after Douglas Costa lays off Teixera, the midfielder makes no mistake with a powerful low finish. Sociedad players look shellshocked.
63'
Ball in the net for Shakhtar but the offiside flag is up. Douglas Costa's shot goes across goal and Taison taps in at the far post. Unfortunately for the visitors he is around five yards offside. Good decision.
62'
Plenty of huffing and puffing for the home side until a ball over the top from the defence sets Seferovic clear. The former Fiorentina frontman has a tight angle and Pyatov does well to parry with his body.
59'
Shakhtar much more solid since the break, and though Sociedad are having much of the possession, they are struggling to find a way through. Into the final third of the match.
57'
Some respite for the visitors as Adriano gets clear down the left and crosses into the box. Bergara can only clear for a corner, and after a training ground move Teixera curls well wide from a tight angle.
55'
Bergara wins the ball in midfield and after some neat passes Pardo gets in down the left. Rakytskyy does well though to concede a corner which is then cleared by Pyatov.
53'
Shakhtar really struggling to get any type of foothold in this game. Their front four have given the ball away regularly while Hubschmann seems more intent on marking Prieto than keeping the ball himself.
51'
Sociedad again keeping the ball well as they look to mark their return to the European big time with a win. They would deserve it at present.
49'
Shakhtar still looking to hit their hosts on the break though Adriano is now coming slightly deeper and try get more involved. He was left rather isolated in the first half.
47'
Opening moments of the second half sees some excellent blocks at either end of the field. First Estrada gets in the way of Taison's goalbound effort before two Shakhtar men dive at Griezmann's feet to deny the striker.
46'
We're all set for the second period as the hosts get us underway...
45' +1
Luiz Adriano gets yellow.
A third Shakhtar booking of the half as Adriano uses too much of his arm to hold off Pardo and after consulting his linesman the referee produces a yellow card.
45'
In fact it is Griezmann who hits this one but his left foot effort doesn't have enough bend and is well wide of the post.
44'
Y. Rakitskyi gets yellow.
Bergara frees Griezmann and the young forward is away again. He then tries to feed Prieto but is fouled by Rakytskyy in the process. The defender is booked and Pardo has another opportunity from a dead ball.
42'
Pardo hits it but the wall does it job and deflects it wide for a corner which is cleared.
41'
Hosts looking to break the deadlock before the break and Pardo breaks into the box. He pokes an effort towards goal but Pyatov is down well. Shakhtar then lose the ball again and Prieto wins a free-kick right on the edge of the area.
40'
Griezmann has certainly been the standout player of the opening 40 minutes, and he is at it again as he breaks from midway inside the Shakhtar half. This time he chooses to shoot but his effort is well over the bar.
38'
Entering the final few minutes of the first half and Shakhtar seemed to have reorganised and stopped the previous period of pressure from Sociedad. Visitors keeping the ball much better now.
36'
Another Srna cross is easily cleared and Sociedad can break. Vela eventually looks for Griezmann in the box but his centre is too high for the striker. Bergara limping back on as he tries to shake off his sore ankle.
34'
This doesn't look good for Bergara and he can hardly walk even with assistance. Esteban Granero readying himself on the bench.
33'
Bit of concern for the hosts as Bergara goes down holding his ankle. Physio on to try and get him back in working order.
32'
Shakhtar win their first corner but Taison's delivery doesn't beat the first man. Visitors need to capitalise on their opportunities.
30'
More good play from Sociedad sends Seferovic down the right, and after Griezmann can't make anything of his cross, De la Bella lashes an effort well over the top from distance. Shakhtar under the cosh.
28'
Sociedad exerting the pressure and another Griezmann corner is aimed at the back post. Pyatov comes but only just gets a hand to it with two home players queueing up to finish.
26'
From the resulting corner Prieto peels away at the back post but fires his shot over the top. Let off for the visitors.
25'
Griezmann has shown some good touches so far. This time he plays a defence-splitting pass for Vela who latches onto it and looks likely to score until Rakytskyy makes an excellent last ditch tackle.
24'
Srna has got forward well from right back, but his delivery has left something to be desired thus far. He is picked out galloping up the wing but his low ball across is too close to Bravo and goalkeeper picks it up under no pressure.
22'
Prado looks to find Seferovic in the box but the striker cannot get on the end of it Shevchuk uses his body and watches the ball float out for a goal kick.
20'
Both teams are playing fairly high lines but at present the offside traps are in full working order. Seferovic and Adriano respectively will have to work hard to get clear of the two defences.
18'
Shakhtar looking to play killer passes in the final third, and Taison is the next to try his luck. His ball looks Adriano breaking through but Bravo is out quickly to neutralise the danger.
16'
Alex Teixeira gets yellow.
First booking of the evening, and it is for Teixera as he looks to trick the referee by going down under Gonzalez's challenge. The Romanian official is having none of it though and rightly books the playmaker for simulation.
14'
Pardo breaks away from Shevchuk and it looks as if the ball will break for him in the box. Pyativ is off his line quickly though and takes a blow to the head for his bravery. The Ukraine number one is up quickly though and the game carries on.
12'
Some players have struggled to stay on their feet in these early stages after a lot of rain has fallen on the surface. Plenty of puddles on the running track round the playing surface but the pitch itself looks excellent.
10'
After a slightly frenetic opening we have a period of calm. Sociedad looking to get their foot on the ball and knock some passes around to try and get rid of some nerves.
8'
Shakhtar look to break after a period in their own half, but Srna's cross from the right is poor and Sociedad can clear easily.
6'
Vela, who is the only player in the Sociedad side with any Champions League experience, is working hard to hurry the Shakhtar defence, but Kucher's early error apart they look fairly comfortable in possession.
4'
Good start for the home side as a free-kick is whipped in from the left and Prieto nods it towards goal. His effort is straight at Pyatov, though, and the goalkeeper catches comfortably.
3'
Despite the visitors having much of the early possession, it is Sociedad who have the first opportunity as Kucher gives the ball away on the edge of his own box. The ball finds its way to Griezmann whose shot from an angle is parried low to his left by Pyatov.

Shakhtar kick-off and we are up and running...
The teams are in ahead of kick-off in San Sebastian...
Real Sociedad: Bravo, Martinez, Estrada, De la Bella, Martinez, Bergara, Prieto, Pardo, Griezmann, Seferovic, Vela.
In a group that contains Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen, these two sides will both fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stages of this year's Champions League. After their performances last season Shakhtar are well fancied to reach the last 16, but after the sale of some key players, will they be quit the same force again?
Sociedad scraped into the Champions League on the final day of La Liga season in May, but after knocking Lyon out in the play-offs they should not be taken lightly. Three years ago they were in the second tier of Spanish football, so their rise has been quite rapid.
Despite Mkhitaryan and Fernandinho leaving the club during the summer, and Willian before them, Shakhtar have ensured they can still be a force in Europe after splashing the catch over the summer. Their record away from home is poor, and have lost their last three domestic fixtures, but they will be confident heading into tonight's fixture.
Despite bringing in their new signings, Mircea Lucescu has chosen to leave some of them on the bench for this evening. Bernard and Fred will both have to wait to make their European bows for their new club after being named amongst the replacements.
The players are in the tunnel and we are moments away from hearing that most famous of footballing theme tunes.
The players make their way onto the field and the Champions League anthem rings out around the Municipal Stadium for the first time since 2003. The customary handshakes take place and we are minutes away from kick-off in Spain.
So here it is, the Champions League group stages. Here begins the journey to the showpiece event in European football. The players are ready and we are about to get underway.
Hello and welcome to live commentary from Real Sociedad's Champions League encounter against Shakhtar Donetsk. The home side are making their first appearance in the competition in nine years, and they begin their Group A campaign against a side in Donetsk who reached the last 16 of last year's tournament. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you thorugh th opening night of the group stages of Europe's premier club competition.
And that is the final act of the half. Sociedad have had much the better of it and until his booking Adriano has been a spectator for the visitors. Plenty for Lucescu to do at the break.
I'll be back for the second half in around ten minutes time as these two sides look to kickstart their Champions League campaigns.
Welcome back to San Sebastian where the players are beginning to make their way back onto the field. The other game in this group sees Manchester United 1-0 up against Bayer Leverkusen, so these sides will be hoping to pick up three points to try and keep pace with the English champions.
And there goes the final whistle. Shakhtar have run out 2-0 winners after Alex Teixera's second-half brace. The hosts huffed and puffed but they couldn't break down the strong Ukranian defence.
Elsewhere in Group A Manchester United have beaten Bayer Leverkusen 4-2, and so are level on points with Shakhtar at the top of the group. The pair play each other in Matchweek Two. For now though they can celebrate a rare away win. I've been Tom Maston and thank you for joining me.
