An uneventful period of stoppage time passes and the referee blows the final whistle!
90'
There will be three minutes of added time at the end of this game.
88'
Madrid are controlling possession in these closing stages, with Villarreal showing none of the urgency that they has earlier in the game. Vietto goes down after a coming together with Ramos when the pair contested an aerial ball, but there was very little in it.
86'
Marcelino has certainly not enjoyed today's game. He looks just as forlorn as at any point today, with his team's chances of finding a route back into the game evaporating with every passing second.
84'
Isco enters the game and replaces K. Benzema.
Benzema's afternoon comes to a premature end as he is replaced by Isco for the closing few minutes. Musacchio, meanwhile, has dropped off the ball and looks like he needs some treatment for cramp.
82'
Espinosa whips it in but the delivery is headed out as far as Cani on the left. He lofts the ball back to the far post where it is brought down by Mario, but his cutback is blazed over the top by Vietto.
80'
Illarramendi tries to read a pass and get to it first but commits a foul on Espinosa as he does so. A free kick to the hosts in a decent area now. Can they make anything of this?
79'
Madrid have really taken their foot off the gas now. They feel this game is won and they are in absolutely no hurry to push it forward. Now they just knock a few passes around in midfield to try and force the tiring Villarreal players into more running.
77'
SAVE BY CASILLAS! Jonathan dos Santos tries his luck by striking the ball on the bounce from 30 yards, rifling a shot on target. It is not quite close enough to the corner to really stretch Casillas, though, and he dives to his right and brings it in at the dirst time of asking.
76'
Nacho enters the game and replaces Marcelo.
Another change here from Ancelotti as Marcelo makes way for Nacho for the closing stages.
Minute
Description
74'
Illarramendi enters the game and replaces J. Rodríguez.
As things stand, Madrid will move up to fourth position, one point ahead of Atletico Madrid who face Sevilla later tonight.
72'
Espinosa initiates a one-two with Vietto and then cuts inside of Marcelo and onto his left boot. However, once in the shooting position he rather scuffs his attempt straight into Casillas' arms.
70'
The game is becoming increasingly stretched now! One counter practically follows another, with Villarreal also showing great urgency when they get on the ball.
68'
J. dos Santos enters the game and replaces Manu Trigueros.
Los Blancos are just looking to catch Villarreal on the counterattack now. You get the feeling if they can convert one break into a goal then this game will be as good as done. One strike for the hosts, however, and a frantic ending to the match would instantly be set up.
66'
Espinosa gives the ball away cheaply in midfield and Madrid break away. The ball is sent out right to Bale and, as he looks to create space for the cross, the momentum decreases. He eventually rifles a cross in but it is too close to Asenjo and the keeper claims.
65'
G. dos Santos enters the game and replaces I. Uche.
64'
Marcelino clearly isn't giving up hope on this game and he brings on Giovani dos Santos in place of Uche. The striker impressed in the first half but his influence waned in the second half as fatigue began to set in.
62'
Ronaldo seems to have lost all his composure! The Portuguese now fluffs his lines when presented with a chance to shot from no more than 15 yards! This game could have been put to bed.
61'
Javier Espinosa enters the game and replaces Moi Gómez.
60'
Bale gets to the byline and cuts a pass back for Ronaldo, but as the Portuguese attempts to roll a pass across to James he fails to make contact with the ball! Musacchio spots his chance and dives in to come away with the ball.
58'
CLOSE! Moi Gomez pops up on the right and bends a fantastic cross into the space between Casillas and his defence. Vietto slides in in an attempt to connect at the back post but the ball is just too far ahead of him and he is unable to convert.
56'
Good defensive work from James, there, as he chases Mario down as the right-back looks to run into the Madrid half and bear down on Marcelo. The Colombian won the ball cleanly but will really be wanting to make more of an impact further up the pitch.
54'
Mario beats Marcelo impressively and moves inside from the right. He eventually clips a cross into the box but he really overhits it and sends possession straight to Ronaldo.
52'
HE'S SLICED IT! A cross is absolutely rifled in from the right flank but Vietto does well to control it with his chest and bring it down on the deck inside the box. He wriggles away from a couple of white shirts and tees up Mario 18 yards from goal only for the right-back to cut across his shot and completely miss the target!
50'
Marcelo does well to break beyond Mario but his cross is straight into Asenjo's arms. Villarreal then offer a counter of their own which leads to a chance to shoot for Trigueros and a deflection off Varane sends it out for a corner.
48'
GREAT CHANCE! A quick passing move sees Gabriel released in behind the Madrid defence but his attempt to pick out the far corner is awful and, similarly to Vietto in the first half, he fires high into the stands.
46'
We are off again at El Madrigal!
45'
Marcelino has his head in his hands on the touchline! The coach clearly isn't too happy with what he's seen in the first 45 minutes. Villarreal have had bright moments but have been nowhere near as clinical as their opponents today.
There is no stoppage time at the end of the first half!
43'
WHAT A BLOCK! Trigueros controls the ball on his chest on the penalty spot and is given time to get a volley away at goal. It looks sure to be heading into the back of the net but Marcelo flings himself in the way and sends the ball away from goal!
42'
Uches's blushes are spared! The striker skied the ball over an open goal but the referee pulled play back for an offside decision. A real let off for the striker, as it wouldn't have counted anyway!
40'
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by K. Benzema.
GOOOOOOAAAAL!! AN INCISIVE BREAKAWAY! Villarreal fail to maintain possession following the free kick and a long ball sets Benzema down towards the byline on the right. He holds off Ruiz before getting his head up and passing for Ronaldo to sweep a shot into the bottom corner for his 10th, yes 10th, Liga strike of the season!
39'
Bruno strikes the free kick from 25 yards but sends it straight into the wall. A waste of a great opportunity, there.
38'
Sergio Ramos gets yellow.
Ramos goes into the book as he hauls Uche to ground when the striker spins in behind and looks set to run onto Trigueros' through-ball. A free kick in a dangerous area here...
36'
Bale picks up the ball on the right and drives inside. He attempts to wriggle his way between a number of yellow shirts but is crowded out and dispossessed at the top of the box.
34'
Almost an instantly reply! Villarreal work the ball from the left to right before Mario lifts a cutback from the byline on the far side. It is met by Vietto inside the box but he steers his header wide of the far post! Another decent opportunity for the hosts.
32'
L. Modrić has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by T. Kroos.
GOOOOOOAAAAL! Kroos passes to Modric, in space 20 yards from goal, and he sets himself with one touch before rifling a shot past Asenjo and into the back of the net with his second. A great strike from the Croatian!
31'
Lots of sideways passing from Madrid across the edge of the box but not penetration. As they continue to try and create an opening an eventually misplaced past sees the move break down.
30'
STAT: Los Blancos have not been defeated by Villarreal in any of their previous eight meetings, winning six and drawing two.
28'
WHAT A MISS! Vietto drifts into space and receives the ball from Uche. He knocks it behind Ramos and runs past him and when one-on-one with Casillas he skies his effort! It was clear that he was looking to bend the shot into the top corner - he just got it all wrong.
27'
Kroos bends it in to the middle and Ramos gets his head to it, however, the referee blows his whistle for what looks like an offside decision.
26'
Ronaldo tries to trick his way past Gabriel but ends up running straight into the Brazilian. The Villarreal man recovered quickly and came away with the ball but the referee awarded the visitors a free kick. James and Kroos stand over it, 25 yards out.
25'
Mario has been tireless in the opening 25 minutes as yet again he races up on the overlap to receive the ball at the byline. However, his cutback is intercepted by the Madrid defence once more and the threat is removed from the box.
24'
Bale clips a cross in from the right but again there is no one attacking it and Asenjo is able to claim the ball in complete comfort.
23'
Things just aren't clicking for Madrid at the moment. Carvajal comes forward on the right and opts to pull the ball back to Bale at the top of the box. The Welshman doesn't read his intentions though and is flat-footed as the pass glides past him and straight to a yellow shirt.
21'
Not like that they won't! Marcelo attempts to flight a ball in from the left but he gets far too much behind it and hoofs his cross straight into the stands behind the goal.
20'
Villarreal forge a decent-looking break but the final ball out to Moi Gomez is overhit and the midfielder fails to keep it in play. The hosts are performing very well so far, but will Madrid be able to create a clear-cut opportunity soon given their superior possession?
18'
Ronaldo comes inside from the left but can't find space for a shot so lays possession off to Marcelo. The left-back looks to take it back outside and get to the byline but he fails to get the better of Mario, who makes a challenge which knocks the ball off the Madrid man and out for a goal kick.
16'
A quick glimpse of the 'Come Home Ronaldo' banner as it is flown above the El Madrigal. Sections of the Manchester United support clearly want their former player back at the club!
15'
STAT: Following his four goals against Elche, one more hat-trick for Ronaldo would see him match Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano on 22 La Liga hat-tricks.
13'
WHAT A CHANCE! Moi Gomez beats Carvajal down to the byline and cuts back a great pass for Vietto. The Argentine attempts to guide a first-time shot inside the near post but he fails to get the better of Casillas, who has been kept very busy early on.
12'
A quick break from Villarreal! Vietto carries the ball forward and rides a challenge before feeding Uche. Varane reads it well, though, and manages to get between the striker and the ball and knock it behind for a corner.
11'
RONALDO! The Portuguese aims for the bottom corner with a snapshot from 18 yards out. It looks like it could sneak in the bottom corner so Asenjo takes no chances and gets his fingertips to it and turns it behind.
10'
Uche could do with changing his footwear! Not for the first time the Nigerian slips as he looks to take on his marker and it results in the attack breaking down. He has been very lively nonetheless.
8'
Madrid are being forced to do a fair bit of defending here! Cani spots the overlapping run of Mario and feeds him the ball at the byline. The right-back does well to square it into the centre where a swarm of bodies await it, however, Casillas manages to fling a leg at it and clear the danger.
7'
GREAT SAVE CASILLAS! Bruno picks out Uche on the top of the box and the striker's first touch enables him to shift the ball into space and away from Varane. He uses the extra room to have a crack at the near post and Casillas does superbly to get down low and parry it aside.
5'
Ramos controls a corner in the centre of the box before lashing a volley into the bottom corner! However, the referee awards the hosts a free kick as the centre-back used his arm to bring the ball down. Good spot from the official.
4'
Oh Bale! The Welshman tries to turn his marker down in the corner but only succeeds in beating himself and stumbling to ground on his way to the byline. He gets up and gives the ground a dirty look!
3'
Moi Gomez has played a couple of decent passes from the left flank already this afternoon. His second picks out Uche in space 25 yards from goal but his touch deserts him and the Madrid defence are able to pick the attack apart.

We are underway at El Madrigal!
Hello and welcome to this afternoon's play-by-play coverage of the Liga clash between Villarreal and Real Madrid. Today's hosts could only muster a 1-1 draw with newly-promoted Eibar in midweek, while los Blancos thrashed Elche 5-1 so sit one place above today's opponents in the table in sixth position. My name is Tom Webber and I will be guiding you through all the action.
Madrid have scored an unbelievable 18 goals in their last three outings in all competitions, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting eight of those. The Portuguese already has nine strikes to his name in La Liga and will certainly be in a confident mood ahead of today's game at El Madrigal. Ronaldo's overall record now stands at 264 goals in 254 games.
VILLARREAL TEAM NEWS: Jaume Costa, Hernan Perez and Bojan Jokic are all out due to injury, while Pablo Iniguez fails to get himself to match fitness for today. Still, Marcelino makes six changes to the team that drew at Eibar on Wednesday, including a completely changed four-man midfield.
REAL MADRID TEAM NEWS: Carlo Ancelotti dropped Karim Benzema and used a 4-4-2 for the triumph over Elche, but the Frenchman is reinstated today for a much more familiar Blancos line-up. Iker Casillas takes his place in goal after being replaced by Keylor Navas in midweek.
Villarreal (4-4-2): Asenjo; Mario, Musacchio, Victor Ruiz, Gabriel; Moi Gomez, Trigueros, Bruno, Cani; Uche, Vietto.
Villarreal bench: Juan Carlos, Rukavina, Pina, J. Dos Santos, Espinosa, G. Dos Santos, Gerard.
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Casillas; Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo; Kroos, Modric; Bale, James, Ronaldo; Benzema.
Real Madrid bench: Navas, Arbeloa, Nacho, Illarramendi, Aguza, Isco, Hernandez.
The last time Villarreal defeated the club from the capital was in May 2009, when a late Joan Capdevilla goal secured a 3-2 win at El Madrigal. It was part of a run of five defeats which saw Real Madrid crumble away in the title race, eventually finishing nine points behind eventual winners Barcelona.
El Madrigal does not seem quite as formidable these days. El Submarino Amarillo have won just six of their last 16 home games in La Liga. It took a late goal from Sandro to give Barcelona a win here earlier this season, so will they be able to push Real Madrid to similar lengths?
The teams are out on the pitch and the pre-match formailities are all but over. Kick off will be upon us in just a few moments.
HALF TIME - Villarreal 0-2 Real Madrid: It was a slow start from los Blancos but strikes from Modric and Ronaldo in the latter stages of the half give them a solid two-goal advantage going into the break. Be sure to return in 15 minutes to see if they can hold onto it for the second half!
Welcome back! The teams are out and we will be underway momentarily.
FULL TIME - Villarreal 0-2 Real Madrid: Los Blancos secure a solid win at El Madrigal thanks to first-half goals from Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo. The hosts never looked liked finding a way back into the game after that and suffer their second home defeat of the season. Real Madrid, for the time being at least, move up to fourth!
That is it from me, Tom Webber, for this afternoon. Thanks for joining me!
