The final chance for Liverpool goes as Manquillo is caught offside on the right-hand side, and surely now Madrid will see this out and reach the knockout stages.
90' +1
We are into three minutes of stoppage time and now Real Madrid are happy to keep possession in midfield and see the game out as they close in on the last-16.
89'
Liverpool are beginning to throw more men forward now as they chase an equaliser. Casillas is still yet to make a save but they could yet steal something in the final seconds.
87'
J. Hernández enters the game and replaces K. Benzema.
Benzema is given the final few minutes off as Hernandez comes off the bench to replace him. At present, the France striker is the matchwinner.
86'
Bale hits the resulting free-kick, but Mignolet again punches the effort away. Still not safe for the home team as we enter the final five minutes of the game.
85'
Alberto Moreno gets yellow.
Bale breaks away on the right-hand side before Moreno brings him down right on the edge of the box. Unsurprisingly the full-back is booked for that challenge.
83'
Nacho enters the game and replaces Arbeloa.
Ancelotti makes his second change of the evening as Arbeloa is replaced at right-back by Nacho for the closing stages.
82'
Sterling and Coutinho have added some impetus to Liverpool's play but the home defence is standing firm. On a quiet night, Ramos has been outstanding at centre-back.
80'
Madrid still look fairly comfortable as they patiently bring the ball forward. With the score 1-0 they could still let it slip, but Liverpool are still waiting to test Casillas.
78'
Ronaldo gets to the byline on the right-hand side before crossing for Isco. The midfielder's shot is blocked by Manquillo before Marcelo sends the rebound wide from 25 yards.

Description
76'
Marcelo gets yellow.
Marcelo goes into the book for a cynical challenge on Sterling inside the Liverpool half. The England winger is already worrying Los Blancos' defence with his trickery.
75'
Philippe Coutinho enters the game and replaces E. Can.
74'
Real work a corner out to Kroos around 25 yards from goal, and the Germany midfielder's effort is fierce but flies over the crossbar. Meanwhile Coutinho replaces Can in Liverpool's final change.
72'
Ronaldo again tries his luck with a free-kick from 20 yards, but it is straight at Mignolet and the goalkeeper opts to punch it away. Still no joy for the Portuguese.
71'
OFF THE CROSSBAR! Marcelo is having plenty of joy down the left and again gets clear of Manquillo to cross from the left. Bale is there in the middle, but his effort comes crashing back off the crossbar.
69'
S. Gerrard enters the game and replaces Lucas Leiva.
R. Sterling enters the game and replaces L. Marković.
JUST OVER! Almost a carbon copy of the opening goal as Marcelo gets down the left-hand side and crosses for Benzema at the back post, but the striker this time puts his shot over the bar. Meanwhile, Rodgers makes his first changes as Sterling and Gerrard replace Markovic and Lucas.
68'
SUPERB BLOCK! All of a sudden Madrid have two on two as Benzema finds Ronaldo on the edge of the box. The forward has time to bring the ball down and shoot, but Toure does brilliantly to get across and make a fine block.
66'
Liverpool carry the ball forward before Moreno tries his luck from 35 yards, but his effort is always heading wide and Casillas can watch it go dead. Still no saves to make for the goalkeeper.
64'
Benzema finds Ronaldo on the edge of the box but his frustrating evening continues as Toure steps out to make the challenge. Not Ronaldo's night tonight as yet.
62'
G. Bale enters the game and replaces J. Rodríguez.
61'
Borini steps up to strike a low effort that is deflected off the wall and bobbles narrowly wide of the post. Not the worst effort from the former Chelsea man.
60'
Sergio Ramos gets yellow.
Ramos goes into the book as he dives in on Borini on the edge of the box. The Spain defender seemed to get the ball but the referee thought differently. Chance for the Reds from 25 yards in a central position...
59'
James has been quiet but his dead ball delivery has been excellent this evening. This time he whips in a ball from the right, and Toure does well to put Ronaldo off.
57'
JUST WIDE! Liverpool create their first opportunity of the night as Lallana turns on the edge of the box before unleashing an effort that has Casillas worried. The shot, though, is always heading wide of the post.
55'
No real chances so far in the second half, and Rodgers will surely be starting to think about those on the bench. He certainly has some firepower if his team can stay in this game.
53'
J. Rodríguez gets yellow.
Markovic does well to carry the ball 40 yards before drawing a foul from James inside the centre circle which leads to a booking for the Madrid man. No complaints again with the referee's decision.
51'
Some concern here for Benzema as he is caught by Lucas on his ankle. Real put the ball out, but eventually the striker gets to his feet and will be able to continue for the time being.
49'
Madrid have started this second half in impressive form as Benzema and Ronaldo link-up on the edge of the box before the latter fires straight at Mignolet from the edge of the box.
47'
M. Škrtel gets yellow.
Skrtel becomes the first player to go into the box as he dives in on Ronaldo on the left-hand side of the area, and the Liverpool skipper can have no complaints about that one.
46'
Neither side makes any changes at the break, and Real Madrid kick-off to get us back underway...
45'
Moreno, who has had a very good first half, swings in a fine cross from the left-hand side, but Borini is too far off the pace to get on the end of it. Better from the visitors.
43'
Real work the ball around inside the Liverpool half, but eventually the ball falls to Isco on the edge of the area and his shot is always flying over the crossbar.
41'
Liverpool get into the Madrid box for the first time in the game, but Borini's cross from the right is far too deep and the chance is gone. Still, some encouraging play from the Reds.
39'
CHANCES! Twice Mignolet has to be on his toes as first a ball over the top almost comes for Ronaldo, only for the goalkeeper to come off his line to collect. Madrid attack again, though, as Marcelo hits a fierce effort that the Belgium international spills before grasping it at the second attempt.
38'
Real bring the ball forward down the left-hand side, but Benzema is unable to keep the ball on the byline as Skrtel comes across. After an early error, the stand-in skipper is having an encouraging game at centre-back.
36'
JUST OVER! Varane plays a superb diagonal pass into the Liverpool box that Benzema is able to bring down. Toure gets across to make a challenge, but the defender almost puts through his own net as his clearance lands on the roof of the net with Mignolet beaten.
35'
GOOD SAVE! Isco wins a free-kick around 35 yards from goal, but that is not too far for Ronaldo to try his luck. The former Manchester United man hits a poweful swerving effort, but Mignolet is able to punch it away and out for a throw-in.
33'
Kroos gives the ball away in midfield and all of a sudden Markovic is bearing down on the Madrid defence. The former Benfica man has good pace, but Ramos steps across to make a fine challenge.
31'
Oppoortunity for Liverpool as Borini does well to pick up the ball on the left-hand side and draw a foul from Arbeloa. Lallana comes across to swing the ball in, but Real are able to clear after a disappointing delivery.
29'
All of a sudden the hosts look far more comfortable in possession as Liverpool continue to sit back. The Reds will want to keep it at 1-0 for as long as possible and try and steal something late on using their talented substitutes.
27'
K. Benzema has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by Marcelo.
GOAL!!! BENZEMA BREAKS THE DEADLOCK! Finally the hosts find a way through as Marcelo finds space on the left-hand side to whip in a low cross, and Benzema gets away from Toure at the back post to fire into the roof of the net. Relief is the main emotion around the Bernabeu.
26'
Madrid work the ball up to the edge of the area, but captain Skrtel steps out to intercept and get the ball clear. Excellent defending by the Slovakia international.
24'
Liverpool will be very satisfied with how the first quarter of the game has gone, as they have limited the hosts to just a couple of shots on goal and have slowed the tempo considerably. Rodgers' plan working so far.
22'
Toure shows the fleet of foot that is usually reserved for the Madrid players as he skips past James' tackle to launch a Liverpool attack. Eventually the ball reaches Manquillo on the right, but his cross curls out of play before finding Borini.
20'
Liverpool are beginning to drop much deeper, which could be dangerous after just 20 minutes. Borini is becoming more and more isolated with Markovic and Lallana having to break from inside their own half to support him.
18'
Ronaldo comes to life for the first time as he skips past two challenges before shooting from a tight angle, but Mignolet is able to catch with ease. The first glimpse of the Balon d'Or winner's ability on the ball.
16'
Toure collides with Mignolet in the Liverpool box, leading to some pinball around the edge of the area, but Isco's shot is blocked and the chance is gone.
14'
Isco looks to bring the ball away down the left-hand side but Manquillo is able to stand up against him and win a throw-in. Real beginning to get going after a slow start.
12'
The game is very open, though the usual pace that both sides play with has been lacking so far. Patient passing in midfield has been the order of the day.
10'
GREAT SAVE! Liverpool living dangerously at the back as Skrtel gives the ball away on the edge of his own box, Benzema pulls the back from the byline and Ronaldo's shot is tipped over the top by Mignolet. Another fine stop by the goalkeeper.
8'
Modric looks to get Arbeloa in down the right-hand side, but Moreno is able to come across to intercept. The young left-back has made a confident start on his return to Spain.
6'
That James chance apart, it has been a very sloppy start by Real Madrid, with misplaced passes meaning Liverpool are seeing a lot of the ball. No efforts on goal for the Premier League side as yet, however.
4'
GREAT SAVE! First chance of the game for the hosts as Ronaldo plays in James on the edge of the box and the Colombia international does well to get a show away. Mignolet is equal to it, though, as he dives away to his left to palm the ball away.
3'
Bright start made by Liverpool as they keep possession well in midfield and look to build some patient attacks. The final ball into Borini is lacking this time, but Rodgers will be pleased with the confidence his side is showing.
1'
The usual pre-match niceties are over and Liverpool kick-off to get us underway...
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Champions League encounter between Real Madrid and Liverpool. A win for the home side could see them book their place in the knockout stages while Brendan Rodgers' team are looking to hit back after their 3-0 loss at Anfield to Los Blancos on matchday three. I'm Tom Maston and I'll be guiding you through all the action from Santiago Bernabeu.
Carlo Ancelotti's team are on a 11-match winning run and have picked up maximum points from their three Champions League matches to date. A win tonight would see them through to the last 16, while a positive result coupled with Basel and Ludogorets playing out a draw in Switzerland would see them top the group. Few would back against them keeping up their fine run this evening.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have won just one of their last four matches, with their latest defeat coming against Newcastle United on Saturday. Rodgers is beginning to come under some pressure for the first time in his stint as manager at Anfield, and defeat tonight would mean they would likely require wins from their final two group games to reach the knockout stages.
Before we go any further, the two team line-ups have been announced ahead of kick-off in around 30 minutes...
Real Madrid (4-2-3-1): Casillas; Arbeloa, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo; Modric, Kroos; James, Isco, Ronaldo; Benzema.
Real Madrid subs: Navas, Pepe, Bale, Hernandez, Nacho, Medran, Lucas Torro.
Liverpool subs: Jones, Johnson, Gerrard, Henderson, Coutinho, Sterling, Balotelli.
Ancelotti makes just one change from the Real Madrid team that beat Granada on Saturday, with former Liverpool full-back Alvaro Arbeloa replacing Daniel Carvajal. Gareth Bale is fit after missing five matches, but must make do with a place on the bench as Isco keeps his place following some fine displays.
Liverpool's side, meanwhile, is almost unrecognisable from the team that started against Newcastle, with only four players keeping their place. Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli are among those dropped to the bench, with Martin Skrtel captaining the side. Fabio Borini starts up front while Kolo Toure is handed a start at centre-back.
There are now just 15 minutes until kick-off in the Spanish capital as both teams go through the final stages of their warm-ups. The stadium is beginning to fill up with a full house expected, and there are plenty of travelling fans from Merseyside making plenty of noise already.
A Champions League record could be broken this week, with Cristiano Ronaldo requiring just one goal to equal Raul's record of 71 strikes in the competition. Lionel Messi is just one further goal behind the Portugal international, and could break the record himself tomorrow against Ajax if Ronaldo misses out this evening.
If Liverpool are looking for omens, then the fact they are the last English team to win at the Bernabeu may well be one they are clinging to. Yossi Benayoun scored the winner in 2009 as the Reds ran out 1-0 winners, with Gerrard, as with tonight, left on the bench. Could a repeat be on the cards?
The two teams have made their way into the tunnel with the stadium pretty much full now. The players will be met by a wall of noise when they make their way out onto the pitch as two of Europe's most successful sides prepare to do battle.
The two sides enter the stadium and the instantly recognisable Champions League anthem blares out over the tannoy. We are almost ready for kick-off in Madrid - can Real qualify for the last-16 or will Liverpool cause a shock? We're about to find out...
No stoppage time at the end of the first half, and despite the scoreline, Liverpool will be very satisfied with the opening 45 minutes. The Reds have struggled to create any real chances, but are certainly well in the game.
Benzema's goal apart, the Real Madrid attacking players are struggling to create anything in the final third, with Ronaldo especially cutting a frustrated figure. I'll be back in the second half to see if he can find a way through in the second period.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the field, and Real Madrid will look to put this game to bed as soon as possible you would fancy. Remember, they qualify for the knockout stages with victory.
The full-time whistle blows and Real Madrid are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League. They barely made it out of second gear this evening but just about did enough to seal the narrowest of victories thanks to Benzema's goal.
Liverpool's players can be proud of themselves despite the defeat, but with Basel beating Ludogorets in Swizerland this evening, the Reds will likely need to win both of their final two group matches. They face Chelsea on Saturday in a crucial Premier League match, but for now I've been Tom Maston and thanks for joining me.
