England are just looking to see this out now, stroking the ball around between themselves in the final third, passing Slovenia into submission. The hosts' use of the ball has been infinitely better in the second half.
90'
There will be three minutes added on.
89'
C. Smalling enters the game and replaces P. Jagielka.
Another England change is being made here, as Chris Smalling comes on for Jagielka.
88'
P. Jagielka gets yellow.
Poor pass from Cahill as he sells Jagielka short just inside the England half. Jagielka is forced to foul Novakovic and, as a result, he earns a yellow card.
86'
England make another change. Oxlade-Chamberlain is now on, slotting into the space vacated by the departing Sterling in attack.
85'
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain enters the game and replaces R. Sterling.
Henderson exploits space down the right flank and finds himself free of Slovenian defenders. Despite having so much time to pick out a cross in towards the lurking Rooney and Welbeck, his delivery is well over-hit and sails out for a throw-in. What a waste.
83'
Sterling sees his name taken by the referee after kicking the ball away in a show of petulance. A cheap booking.
82'
R. Sterling gets yellow.
Welbeck is desperately seeking his hat-trick. He pounces on the ball just on the edge of the Slovenia area, ducks on to his left foot and strikes. His effort is blocked amid a sea of Slovenian defenders, however.
81'
Lallana's day comes to an end. He has perhaps been a little hit-and-miss today, but he played a key role in the second goal. Milner takes his place.
Minute
Description
80'
J. Milner enters the game and replaces A. Lallana.
79'
N. Clyne gets yellow.
There is Slovenia's latest change. Kirm wanders off and is replaced by Ljubijankic, who, like Novakovic, plies his trade in Japan.
78'
Z. Ljubijankič enters the game and replaces A. Kirm.
77'
Another Slovenia goal would make things very interesting at this stage. England appear to be cruising to victory currently, but if they were to concede again, their visitors would undoubtedly receive a significant boost.
75'
R. Rotman enters the game and replaces J. Kurtič.
Slovenia make their latest change as Rotman comes on for Kurtic in the midfield.
73'
England have been excellent since Slovenia initially took the lead and that goal was nothing less than Welbeck deserved. The Arsenal man, who is enjoying a fine season, often looked dangerous in the first half and his persistence has seemingly paid off.
72'
D. Welbeck has scored a goal for England! Assist by R. Sterling.
GOAL!!! ENGLAND CRUISE TO A THIRD! Delightful goal from the hosts. Gibbs does well on the left, cutting a pass just inside the area to Welbeck, who swiftly eyes a one-two with Sterling. The Liverpool star's return-pass is exquisite and Welbeck, who finds himself beyond the defence, coolly slots past Handanovic. Lovely goal.
71'
Yet again Lallana's set-piece delivery is poor, failing to beat the first batch of Slovenian defenders. Nevertheless, England retain possession and the ball hooked towards Rooney at the back post. The skipper manages to beat Cesar in the air and reach the ball with a header, but he seemed to exert so much effort in simply out-jumping his counterpart that he completely misses the target.
70'
Welbeck peels away to the right to collect Clyne's pass up the flank. He is able to hold the ball up briefly, before winning himself and England a corner. Lallana wanders over to take the set-piece.
68'
What an excellent response England have produced here. It seemed all they needed to be sparked into life was a Slovenia goal. They have been intense, concise and clinical in reaction to falling behind, and few would bet against them going on to win here now.
66'
D. Welbeck has scored a goal for England!
GOAL!!! ENGLAND HAVE THE LEAD! Lallana does brilliantly to beat his man and get a shot away from a tight angle. His effort is deflected, forcing Handanovic into an uneasy save and, as Brecko fails to get enough on his header when trying to clear the rebound, Welbeck is on hand to steer home.
64'
Good play by Rooney as the captain drops deep, dragging Cesar with him and creating a huge space in the Slovenia defence. In response, Rooney turns and plays Sterling into the area, but his pass is just a little too heavy as Handanovic collects.
63'
D. Lazarević enters the game and replaces V. Birsa.
Birsa's corner delivery is less than impressive, though, with the ball sailing deep into the area and virtually out of danger. England are quick to sweep up and clear, with the Slovenian set-piece specialist subsequently substituted.
62'
England almost allow Slovenia a chance to retake the lead as Cahill surrenders possession to Kampl just outside his own area. The forward races into the area and gets a shot away, but Jagielka deflects it behind, bailing his team-mate out.
61'
What a crazy few minutes that was. If you'd had predicted in the first half that such a manic period would arrive, most would have laughed in your face. But thankfully, this match has sparked into life.
59'
Penalty goal scored by W. Rooney for England!
GOAL!!! ENGLAND ARE LEVEL! Rooney steps up and, although Handanovic gets a glove to his spot-kick, the England captain's effort is too powerful and he finds the net.
58'
B. Cesar gets yellow.
J. Henderson is unfortunate, scores an own goal!
PENALTY TO ENGLAND! Rooney charges into the area and, after skipping past one challenge, the forward is tripped in mindless fashion by opposing skipper Cesar.
GOAL!!!! SLOVENIA TAKE THE LEAD! England's defence is breached for the first time in these qualifiers, but it comes in the shape of an own-goal. Henderson rose to clear, glancing the ball over Hart in the England goal.
57'
HANDANOVIC KEEPS ENGLAND OUT! The corner lands at the feet of Rooney deep in the Slovenia area and the forward chips the ball back into the danger area. Jagielka meets it with a header, but Handanovic saves with ease.
56'
Good play by Gibbs as he gets forward down the left, fires a cross in towards the centre and sees his delivery deflected behind. Corner for England as the hosts' pressure intensifies.
55'
We are back underway after that temporary pause. Birsa looked as though he was going to be forced off, but he is trudging back on to the field. We'll see how long he lasts.
53'
Gibbs is the first man to go into the referee's book as the Arsenal left-back goes in hard on Birsa, who appears to be in some pain. He is now seeking some medical attention, so there may be a brief pause in play.
52'
K. Gibbs gets yellow.
Rooney has to get a shot away there! The forward receives a pass into feet on the edge of the area after good work by Welbeck. He jolts to his right in laborious fashion and not only does he see his thoughts read by Cesar, the defender also makes a block.
51'
Handanovic deals well with the corner, however, as the Inter goalkeeper comes out and punches away in acrobatic fahsion. Nevertheless, England remain on the front foot. Encouraging start to the second half for the hosts.
50'
Excellent play by Sterling. The Liverpool star bursts into life down the right, skipping past one challenge before crossing into the centre. Welbeck, Rooney and Wilshere are all waiting for it to drop, but they have to settle for a corner.
48'
ROONEY NODS JUST WIDE! The corner is fired into the area in teasing fashion and the Manchester United forward manages to lose his marker, meeting the delivery with a header. His effort goes agonisingly wide, though.
47'
Good play by Rooney as the England captain showcases his pace down the right flank. He bursts away from Struna and tries to squeeze a cross into the area, with only Welbeck to aim for. The Slovenia defender gets a block in, though, conceding a corner.
46'
And we're back underway for the second half. Will we be treated to a rare shot on target in the second period? Stay tuned to find out.
45'
HALF-TIME!
44'
Cahill goes in a little hard on Novakovic, crashing into the back of the big frontman in the air. With the Slovenian rolling around in pain, his aggressor tries to get him off the ground, drawing a feisty reaction from the prone Novakovic.
42'
A period of England pressure comes to an end as Jagielka runs into the back of Kampl just inside the visitors' half. The first period is petering to a halt and Hodgson surely can't be impressed with what he has seen so far.
40'
Good play by Clyne. The right-back provides Welbeck with support once again and, after checking back inside, he races down the right flank and crosses. His delivery is a little long, but Slovenia are forced to concede a corner as Sterling was lurking.
38'
Welbeck with a decent effort from just outside the area, as he picks up possession and, instead of slipping Rooney into the area, he smashes just over the crossbar. He probably should have hit the target there.
36'
Less than 10 minutes until half-time and England don't really look much more like scoring than they did at the start. Their build-up play has been a bit slow and predictable, but Welbeck, Rooney and Sterling have offered encouragement.
34'
Lallana is in some serious discomfort at the moment. The Liverpool attacker laid the ball off to Clyne and was swiftly clattered into by Cesar. Lallana goes down holding his face and replays show that he was caught in the face by the Slovenian captain's elbow. That was a bit naughty and he is lucky to still be on the pitch after that.
32'
ALMOST A SLOVENIAN CALAMITY! Kurtic so nearly humiliated himself in front of the Wembley crowd. The midfielder, under pressure from Rooney, played an extremely heavy back-pass to Handanovic despite only being about eight yards from goal. Handanovic sticks a foot out and prevents it from going in, though. Corner to England.
30'
WELBECK GOES CLOSE! Sterling exploits space behind Struna down the right flank and, after taking his time to pick out a cross, he plants a delivery right on to the head of Welbeck. His header, however, despite being virtually unmarked, is rather poor and he completely missed the target.
29'
That's a let-off for England. Birsa whips an inviting delivery into the area from the corner and Cesar meets it in emphatic fashion, only to send the ball just wide with a header. That's probably as close as anyone has come to opening the scoring so far.
28'
Novakovic comes to life. The towering centre-forward makes a clever run in behind Jagielka and collects Kampl's throughball. The striker tries to cut a pass back into the area, but it is knocked behind for a corner.
27'
Decent move by England as Wilshere breaks forward, picks out Welbeck with a disguised pass and then the ball is worked out to Clyne. His delivery into the area is well cut out by Cesar, however.
25'
In fairness to Slovenia, however, the visitors have looked rather solid so far. With the experienced Cesar marshalling the backline well, England have struggled breaking through until now. One can't say they have offered much at the other end of the pitch, though. Novakovic is looking a little bored.
23'
Considering how bright England have looked on the few occasions they have tried to cut through Slovenia at speed, it's amazing they are not trying to move the ball quickly more often. Everything is very laboured when the front three aren't involved.
21'
ROONEY BLAZES OVER! What a goal that would have been! Welbeck and his former United team-mate link up to great effect, as the Arsenal man chests down a lofted pass on the edge of the box. His captain latches on to it and fires a half-volley towards goal, slicing it over the crossbar.
19'
Good build-up play again from the hosts. Gibbs squeezes a cross into the centre for Rooney, who, despite struggling to get the ball out from under his feet, finally sets Sterling up on the edge of the area. The Liverpool star tries to charge his way through a crowd of players, but Slovenia clear.
18'
Sterling should do better! Excellent play by Clyne as the right-back skips past Struna far too easily and then cuts a pass back towards the edge of the area for Sterling, who drags a tame effort well off target.
16'
Henderson lofts the ball into the centre from the corner, but nothing comes of the delivery. England remain on the front foot, yet, they aren't doing much with their possession.
14'
That's a bit better. England pounce on a mistake by Ilic and Welbeck finds himself in possession on the edge of the area. He shapes to shoot, before trying to play Clyne into the area as opponents closed in on him. England settle for a corner.
12'
Well, we haven't exactly been treated to a feast of open, expansive or flowing football. Admittedly the state of the pitch probably isn't helping, but this has not been pretty so far.
10'
Henderson tries a similar ball as he is released by Wilshere. This time the Liverpool man is searching for Rooney, but Cesar covers well to intercept. England's midfield duo are certainly putting themselves about, though they need to improve their final ball.
9'
England finally try to carve through the Slovenia defence as Henderson slips a pass between Cesar and the Slovenian left-back for Welbeck. The forward tries to make the most of his pace, but he was given too much to do.
8'
England's build-up play has been patient so far, but they look a little sluggish as they aimlessly knock the ball around in their own half. Slovenia have set up with two very rigid walls of four, making it difficult for the hosts to play through them.
6'
And England nearly create a chance of their own almost immediately after. Rooney races on to a lofted pass from Cahill and he manages to bring the ball down, but under pressure from Cesar his touch is heavy and Handanovic is able to mop up.
4'
And there is the first chance of the day! Surprisingly enough it falls to Slovenia, as Kurtic lofts a fine delivery towards the back post and Kirm gets his head to it after escaping the sights of Clyne. His looping header is easily held by Hart, though.
2'
Lovely move from England as Wilshere bursts through the middle, skipping past a couple of challenges and then picks out Welbeck. The Arsenal forward waits for Sterling to overlap to his right, but the winger's attempted cross is blocked.
1'
And we're off! England get the action started at Wembley.
Hello and welcome to the LIVE text commentary of the Euro 2016 qualifier between England and Slovenia. Wembley Stadium in London is the setting for today's clash as these two sides look to build on their encouraging starts to the qualification campaign. My name is Ryan Benson and I shall be describing the action for you today.
CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
England starting XI (4-4-2): Hart; Clyne, Jagielka, Cahill, Gibbs; Lallana, Wilshere, Henderson, Sterling; Rooney, Welbeck.
Of course, all eyes are on Wayne Rooney in the England line-up. The Manchester United forward and Roy Hodgson's captain will get his 100th international cap today, becoming only the ninth English player to do so and the first to reach that milestone under the age of 30. While the jury is still out whether he will ever be regarded as a 'great', there can be little doubt that today he completes an impressive achievement.
The other major talking point in Hodgson's starting XI is Nathaniel Clyne at right-back. The Southampton defender has enjoyed a fine start to the season after impressing throughout last term. He finally looks set to earn his first cap at the age of 23 and, with there being a general lack of quality in that area for England, he could well go a long way to making that position his own with a positive display today.
Slovenia on the other hand have set up with a fairly defensive shape. A flat back four lies behind a midfield five, with highly-rated Red Bull Salzburg Kevin Kampl working as the link between those in the middle and the potentially isolated lone frontman in Novakovic. Although now plying his trade in Japanese football, the physical forward had a good record when playing for FC Koln in the Bundesliga, reaching double figures in goals twice in the German top flight.
The teams are now out on the pitch as Rooney, along with his children, leads out England. The national anthems are about to be sang, with kick-off less than 10 minutes away.
The referee blows his whistle to end a rather dour first half at Wembley. There has been plenty of prompting and probing from England's perspective, but they have had very little cutting edge and rarely looked like scoring. Slovenia have by no means threatened in an attacking sense themselves, though worryingly for Hodgson, the visitors' backline has been fairly comfortable so far.
And that is that. England claim a comfortable 3-1 win in the end, with Welbeck's double adding to Rooney's penalty. Roy Hodgson's men were thoroughly underwhelming in the first half, but after falling behind to Jordan Henderson's own-goal, they eventually came to life. A decent second-half performance ultimately bailed England out from a tricky situation and they retain their 100 per cent start to their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, taking them on to 12 points.
Thank you for joining me today. I hope you have enjoyed the action. Farewell until next time.
