And we're off! Lithuania get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today's European Championship qualifying clash between England and Lithuania. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Wembley.
After a disappointing World Cup, England have excelled in the Euro 2016 qualifiers, winning all four of their clashes to give them a comfortable six-point lead over Slovenia, Switzerland and Lithuania, all of whom have won two and lost two of their opening games. The Three Lions’ good form means that they go into tonight’s encounter full of confidence and chomping at the bit to make it five wins out of five in their first competitive game of 2015, whilst the inclusion of Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane means that we may finally be able to see the star striker make his full senior debut at some point this evening.
As for Lithuania, a good start to the group stages has turned to disappointment, and they head to Wembley in the wake of a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Switzerland. The fourth-place side were also comfortably beaten 2-0 by Slovenia in October of last year, and there is no doubt that tonight’s clash is going to be just as tough, as they take on an England side that haven’t lost a competitive home game since November 2007. The hosts have also only conceded one goal in their opening four qualifiers, whilst the visitors’ last goal came in a nervy 1-0 home win against Estonia almost six months ago.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
England XI (4-3-3): Hart; Clyne, Cahill, Jones, Baines; Henderson, Carrick, Delph; Sterling, Rooney, Welbeck.
Roy Hodgson has made four changes to the England side to the one that started against Slovenia in their last Euro 2016 qualifier, with Gary Cahill, Leighton Baines, Michael Carrick and Fabian Delph coming into the squad to replace Phil Jagielka, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Adam Lallana.
Meanwhile, Lithuania boss Igoris Pankratjevas has decided to make three alterations to the side that started the 4-0 hammering away to Switzerland, with Egidijus Vaitkunas, Arvydas Novikovas and Gediminas Vicius dropping out to be replaced by Tomas Mikuckis, Marius Zaliukas and Saulius Mikoliunas, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 2-0 LITHUANIA
It's been an almost perfect opening 45 minutes for England, who head into the half-time break with a comfortable, and well-deserved, two-goal lead. Lithuania have found it incredibly difficult to push forward, allowing the hosts to see the vast majority of the ball, and they have used it to great effect, causing the visitors plenty of problems when breaking away. If things continue this way, it should be five out of five victories for the Three Lions come the end of the evening.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 4-0 LITHUANIA
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
In the end it was an incredibly easy evening for England, who remain top of Group E with five wins from their opening five games thanks to tonight's comfortable victory. Lithuania showed bright spells on the rare occasions that they were able to exit their own half of the pitch but never looked like they were going to test the hosts, who defended as brilliantly as they attacked, with Welbeck, Rooney and Sterling all causing the visitors' defence a plethora of problems from start to finish.
