And we're off! England get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Euro 2016 qualifying clash between Slovenia and England. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Stadion Stozice.
With five victories from five qualifiers, England are on course to ease into the final tournament after impressing in the first half of the qualifying campaign, and they will be looking to keep their 100 per cent record intact with another win against a Slovenia side that are their nearest challengers, despite sitting six points behind in second place. Roy Hodgson’s men are without a victory in their last two games after drawing in friendlies against Italy and the Republic of Ireland but thrashed Lithuania 4-0 in their last qualifying clash, whilst the last meeting between these two sides, at Wembley last November, ended 3-1 to the hosts thanks to second-half goals from Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, the latter of whom bagged himself a brace.
Despite losing against England last year, Slovenia arguably represent the Three Lions’ sternest test of the qualifying campaign, as they are the only side to have managed to score against the group leaders, albeit through a Jordan Henderson own goal. This afternoon’s hosts have won three of their last four qualifiers, including a 6-0 thrashing of minnows San Marino in March, but were beaten 1-0 by Qatar in their last clash, a friendly game in Doha two-and-a-half months ago. The fight for second place and, as a result, an automatic spot in France in a year’s time looks to be firmly between Sreko Katanec’s side and Switzerland, so the former will be desperate to pick up a positive result today, particularly as the latter are in action against out-of-form Lithuania.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Servo Katanec has decided to make nine changes to the Slovenia side that started the 1-0 defeat away to Qatar, with Ales Mertelj and Kevin Kampl the only players to retain their places in the starting line-up.
Meanwhile, England boss Roy Hodgson has made three alterations to the side that drew 0-0 against the Republic of Ireland last weekend, with Kieran Gibbs, Fabian Delph and Andros Townsend coming into the squad to replace Ryan Bertrand, James Milner and Adam Lallana, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off. The atmosphere inside the stadium is electric, with both sets of fans in fine voice.
HALF-TIME: SLOVENIA 1-0 ENGLAND
England head down the tunnel incredibly frustrated after bossing possession for the vast majority of the opening period only to find themselves 1-0 down at the half-time break. They have looked confident and impressive in front of goal, with Sterling and Rooney both finding joy when battling against the Slovenia defenders, but a momentarily lapse in concentration from the visitors gifted Novakovic with the opportunity to fire his side into the lead, which is exactly what he did.
With a goal under their belts, Slovenia are almost certain to sit back and defend resolutely after the break, so England must up the tempo if they are to have any hope of finding a way back into the game.
FULL-TIME: SLOVENIA 2-3 ENGLAND
England were made to work extremely hard by a determined Slovenia side, but they come away from Ljubljana with three hard-earned and much-needed points, keeping them top of Group E and now nine points clear of both today's opponents and Switzerland, the latter of whom are in action against Lithuania in 45 minutes' time.
Roy Hodgson's side fully deserve the victory after putting in a great second-half shift against Slovenia, with Lallana's inclusion at the half-time break proving to be the turning point. Wilshere was in inspired form, whilst Rooney's hard work paid off with an excellent goal late on to deny the hosts what would have been an excellent point.
England now go on to face San Marino at the start of September, whilst Slovenia face a tricky trip to Switzerland on the same day.
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
