Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League clash between Crystal Palace and Manchester City. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Selhurst Park.
It’s been a truly remarkable start to the season for Crystal Palace, who head into this afternoon’s game second only to their opponents in the Premier League table. After picking up three victories from their opening four clashes, the Eagles sit three points behind Manchester City in second place, already with over double the amount of points that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have so far accumulated. After winning two of their three first games, the South London side went one better in their final encounter before the international break when they beat the aforementioned Blues at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 1982 to set themselves up wonderfully for today’s clash against the clear title favourites.
There’s no doubt that it’s going to be an incredibly difficult afternoon for Crystal Palace, who will be taking on a Manchester City side that have not only won all of their opening four Premier League games but are yet to concede a single goal. Manuel Pellegrini’s men have looked excellent so far and will be aiming to put more distance between themselves and their title rivals in the coming weeks, starting with today’s clash against a side that tasted victory the last time the two teams met back in April.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Manchester City XI (4-4-2): Hart; Sagna, Kompany, Mangala, Kolarov; Navas, Fernandinho, Toure, Nasri; Bony, Aguero.
Manchester City substitutes: Caballero, Demichelis, Otamendi, Iheanacho, Garcia, Roberts, De Bruyne.
Alan Pardew has decided to make three changes to the Crystal Palace side that started the victory against Chelsea, with Martin Kelly, Brede Hangeland and Yannick Bolasie coming into the squad to replace Joel Ward, Damien Delaney and Connor Wickham.
Meanwhile, Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has made two alterations to the side that featured against Watford in their last Premier League game, with David Silva and Raheem Sterling making way for Samir Nasri and Wilfried Bony. There's also a place on the substitutes' bench for new signing Kevin De Bruyne, who could end up coming on to make his debut at some point this afternoon.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: CRYSTAL PALACE 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY
It's been an incredibly even first half, with both sides enjoying plenty of good chances in front of goal. Palace arguably started the better of the two teams and took City by surprise with a quick start, but the visitors have fought back well and since then have looked dangerous in the final third of the pitch. The hosts are arguably lucky to still have 11 players on the pitch after Dann brought an end to Aguero's game with a terrible sliding challenge, whilst Toure also could have seen red for a cynical boot to the leg of McArthur as tempers flared soon after.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
It's all over and City have just about managed to hold on to pick up all three points! They were made to work incredibly hard by an impressive Palace side, who will hard done by after doing everything right for 89 minutes. However, they fell asleep at the last moment, allowing the young substitute Iheanacho to pop up and poke in the winning goal with mere minutes left on the clock.
The victory means that City have now won all of their opening five Premier League games, keeping them top of the table and moving them 11 points clear of reigning champions Chelsea ahead of next weekend's clash against West Ham United. As for Palace, they now face a tough trip to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur.
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye!
