Hello and welcome to Russia for another lovely evening of Champions League football! The Arena Khimki is our venue tonight as CSKA play host to Wolfsburg with everything still to play for in a tight Group B. Please enjoy our text commentary, guiding you through the match LIVE as it happens!
With Group B remaining so closely contested up to this point, the only thing we know for sure is that CSKA would be eliminated with a loss tonight. A draw would keep their hopes alive, albeit only just, while a victory would leave them in control of their own destiny on the final matchday. No order of finish has been ruled out with two matches remaining, which has set the scene for a terrific conclusion in Group B.
Wolfsburg’s situation is much more murky as we enter the final two rounds of matches. There is no result across the two Group B games tonight that would clinch their place in the next round, or see them eliminated from contention. The fate of Dieter Hecking’s side will be determined on the final matchday as a result, but they can give themselves a big boost by taking as little as a point from this match – something they have yet to do on their travels in this group stage.
Seydou Doumbia has recovered late from injury to partake in the match. It is terrific news for the hosts to have their prolific Ivorian striker leading the lines, flanked by Ahmed Musa and Zoran Tosic. Bibras Natcho is dropped to the bench to make room, after featuring in the defeat to Krylya Sovetov on the weekend.
Dieter Hecking has named the same starting XI which trounced Werder Bremen 6-0 on the weekend, opting not to tamper with a winning formula. As a result, Ricardo Rodriguez is relegated to a spot on the substitute's bench for Wolfburg for the first time in the group stage, with Marcel Schafer making his first start of this campaign in the competition. Julian Draxler misses out through injury, while Andre Schurrle starts on the bench.
CSKA 0-0 WOLFSBURG. Nothing to separate the two sides after a 45 minutes bereft of any attacking quality. The visitors have produced the better moments in the final third, at least producing a few half chances, but at the other end Benaglio has yet to be called into action.
CSKA 0-2 WOLFSBURG. Die Wolfe take a big step towards the last 16 through super-sub Andre Schurrle, while sending the Army Men out of the competition. It was scoreless at the interval and the hosts looked the brighter of the two teams in the second half, but a goalkeeping error from Igor Akinfeev gifted Wolfsburg the lead and they never looked back.
