The first error from Taison in this game as Madrid cough up possession. he has the chance to spread the ball to Teixeira on the left-hand side, but his pass lacks accuracy, and that should be that.
90' +2
All hands to the pump now for both sides, but it seems that time is Madrid's best friend at this point. The visitors are in possession, and are killing as much time as they can.
90'
Incredible recovery from the home side and an even more remarkable collapse from Real Madrid. They can't blow this now, can they? All eyes are on the linesman, who signals for three minutes of added time.
88'
Alex Teixeira has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk! Assist by Taison.
MADNESS! IT'S A THIRD FOR SHAKHTAR! The magnificent Taison plays a solid pass into Teixeira just inside the area, and the captain takes a touch before picking his spot in the bottom corner! Surely not!
87'
Danilo gets yellow.
CHANCE AGAIN FOR SHAKHTAR! Taison leads the break with a storming run, and he plays in Teixeira clean down the left. He tries to hoist a ball into the near post area for Ferreyra, but Casilla is there to make a vital grab at that post!
86'
FREE KICK to Shakhtar on the edge of the box, as Danilo clips Ordets on the right, earning him a yellow card. However, the resulting delivery fails to pick out an orange shirt in the area.
85'
Just like Madrid did earlier in the second half, Shakhtar have scored twice in a matter of minutes, halving the deficit but still leaving themselves with a little too much to do given the time that remains.
83'
Dentinho has scored a goal for Shakhtar Donetsk! Assist by T. Stepanenko.
SHAKHTAR SCORE AGAIN! Bernard wins and delivers a corner, Stepanenko flicks it on at the near post and Dentinho tucks it into an unguarded net on the opposite side!
81'
Some decent passing from the home side now, with Taison providing a fair bit of enterprise down the left. His introduction could have made an even bigger difference if it came earlier.
79'
Shakhtar have scored here and it's no surprise that they needed a dead-ball scenario to do so. They have failed to register a single shot on target in this game, which tells the story.
Minute
Description
77'
Penalty goal scored by Alex Teixeira for Shakhtar Donetsk!
TEIXEIRA MAKES NO MISTAKE! The prolific playmaker slams into the bottom-left corner. Casilla guesses correctly but there was no keeping that spot-kick out.
76'
PENALTY TO SHAKHTAR! Taison gets the ball down the right and is sandwiched by two defenders. In his attempts to wriggle free, Casemiro trips him, and the referee points to the spot!
74'
F. Ferreyra enters the game and replaces O. Hladkyi.
A few free-kicks in the middle of the park break up play as the home side try, and fail, to play their way through. It's keeping with the story of this game, where the hosts have created little.
72'
Bale, moments after providing his second assist of the evening, departs for Benzema. Shakhtar respond with a sub of their own, as the luckless Gladkiy is withdrawn for Facundo Ferreyra.
71'
K. Benzema enters the game and replaces G. Bale.
70'
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a goal for Real Madrid!
RONALDO MAKES IT FOUR! Bale skips past one challenge en route to the byline, and his low cross is smashed towards goal by Ronaldo. The initial effort is blocked, but there was no stopping the Portuguese from the rebound!
68'
There's a great chance for Madrid to break and add a fourth, but Isco seems to have gotten caught in two minds, killing the momentum of the attack with his uncertainty on the ball.
66'
Not a whole lot happening out on the pitch as Madrid have everything under their control. There is no real urgency to anything Shakhtar are doing at the moment, leading to a bit of a lull.
64'
Dentinho enters the game and replaces Márcio Azevedo.
Another change for the home team, as Azevedo makes way for Dentinho. At this stage, you can't really imagine any of these substitutes for Shakhtar making a huge difference in the direction of this game.
62'
Taison enters the game and replaces Marlos.
T. Kroos enters the game and replaces L. Modrić.
Changes have been made by both managers just after the hour mark in this game. Benitez has pulled the impressive Modric and replaced him with Kroos, while Lucescu brings on Taison for Marlos.
60'
Kovacic spearheads the latest attack, rolling the ball to Casemiro, who in turn slips in Ronaldo on the right-hand side. He has time and space to shoot, but fails to find the target.
58'
Madrid suddenly look like scoring anytime they go forward. Kovacic dinks in a lovely ball for Modric to attack at the far post, but the midfielder's first-time strike is blocked by a defender.
56'
In the space of a few minutes, Shakhtar see their knockout-stage hopes all but evaporate. Barring a miracle recovery which would require them to score at least four goals, the Europa League is the best that they can hope for.
54'
In the buildup to the second Madrid goal, Rakitskiy was the one that was out of sync with the rest of the defence, playing Ronaldo onside. He has had to shoulder partial blame for two of the goals.
52'
Dani Carvajal has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by Cristiano Ronaldo.
SPLENDID FROM CARVAJAL! Where did that come from? The full-back, not know for his goalscoring, picks Azevedo's pocket down the right and then proceeds to bend in a magnificent curler into the far corner from an angle!
51'
PYATOV CALLED INTO ACTION AGAIN! The defence falls asleep straight form kick-off as Madrid win the ball back, and Ronaldo very nearly beats the keeper to Modric's pass, but the save is made!
50'
L. Modrić has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by Cristiano Ronaldo.
MODRIC MAKES IT 2-0! A classic counter-attack from the visitors! Ronaldo storms down the right flank, gets to the byline and waits for just the right moment to tee up the Croatian at the near post, who smashes in from close range with a sweeping finish!
49'
Carvajal loses a header against Gladkiy and moments later, has the chance to challenge the forward again, but comes in late and upends him. He's been booked for that foul.
48'
Dani Carvajal gets yellow.
47'
First shot in anger of the second half as Isco pounces on a lapse in possession to tee up Bale at the edge of the area, but the Welshman can't find the target with his low drive.
46'
Off we go again!
45' +1
After some treatment, Pepe is fit enough to at least see out the final seconds of the half. There's a glimpse of a chance for Bale on the break. However, he's on the right flank this time, meaning that it takes him some time to angle the cross in, which sails over the head of Ronaldo anyway.
44'
Azevedo does excellently on the flank to wrangle space for a cross, which is put right into the heart of the six-yard area. Pepe and Casilla both come for it along with Gladkiy, and the resulting clash sees the ball clear, but has the Portuguese defender in a heap on the turf.
42'
Shakhtar suddenly start to turn it up during the closing stages of the half, and get a cross into a good area after Marlos and Bernard force the issue down the left. However, Gladkiy's header at the back post is off target!
40'
Bale breaks forward to end a spell of Shakhtar possession, and he has the defence on their toes. He makes space for the shot, and it's on target, but Pyatov isn't put under too much pressure and saves.
38'
There's just no potency to the Shakhtar attack. They've put together some good sequences in the midfield, but any time they approach the edge of the area they usually end up surrendering possession.
36'
Teixeira tries to take a low cross on the turn, but Pepe flies in with a clearance to get rid of the danger. Stepanenko then has to bring down Bale to stop the counter, earning him a booking.
35'
T. Stepanenko gets yellow.
34'
Real Madrid are just calming things down after a little flurry of activity from Bernard and Azevedo just outside the final third. To be fair, the hosts haven't looked like scoring in this game.
33'
Danilo enters the game and replaces R. Varane.
32'
Trouble here for Varane, who is not able to continue in this game after sustaining an injury. He's been a virtual ever-present in the Madrid side this season, but his night is at an end as Danilo comes on in his stead.
30'
RONALDO WITH ANOTHER CHANCE! Bale does well again down the left-hand side, beating his marker and lifting a great cross in for the Portuguese - who climbs above his man but plants his header right at Pyatov!
28'
The pace of the game has rather died down since Madrid took the lead. Shakhtar are relying a little too much on long balls for my linking, and the defence is having no trouble shepherding it back to Casilla.
26'
Paris Saint-Germain aren't playing around in the other Group A match, taking a 2-0 lead against Malmo already in Sweden. This spells trouble for Shakhtar, as a PSG win ends their round of 16 hopes no matter what happens here.
24'
Real Madrid win a free-kick on the left side of the area. There's only one man standing over it, and it's the goalscorer and the one who won the set-piece in the first place. However, Ronaldo's strike sails comfortably over.
22'
Gladkiy has been a ghost tonight due to lack of service, but there's a half-chance for him to get on the end of Marlos' cross, but he can't make his connection in time thanks to the defence.
20'
That's a landmark goal for Ronaldo, his 450th in club competition. Make no mistake, Madrid did well to execute that goal - particularly the killer pass from Modric - but it was a gift from the hosts.
18'
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored a goal for Real Madrid! Assist by G. Bale.
RONALDO STRIKES FIRST! Modric chips a superb ball in for Bale down the left. Rakitskiy and Pyatov come for it but get their wires crosses, allowing the Welshman to hoist it in for Ronaldo to glance a soft header into the back of a unguarded net!
17'
Madrid's fast start has disappeared now, as Shakhtar are beginning to apply more pressure in the midfield areas. The centre of the pitch was one of the biggest weaknesses for Los Blancos during the Clasico, and the visitors are doing well to battle.
15'
Carvajal takes out Bernard about 25 yards from goal, presenting the hosts with a chance from the set piece. However, Rakitskiy does not test Casilla, firing well over the crossbar.
13'
Real Madrid are starting to get a little sloppy in terms of their challenges, perhaps receiving the benefit of the doubt on one or two decisions by the referee. The home fans have taken notice.
11'
The home side are starting to grow into this match in the last few minutes, at least in terms of keeping Madrid off the ball. They are striving to get balls in from the flanks, but so far, the visitors have done well to prevent crosses from getting into the penalty area.
9'
One man Real Madrid will have to watch out for is the captain Teixeira. He has scored 19 goals in 13 games this season in the league - including 14 in his last eight domestic outings.
7'
There's a glimpse of an opportunity for Shakhtar on the break as Marlos races onto a punt down the right, but he fails to make inroads into the final third. Ok, maybe calling that anything approaching a chance might have been a stretch.
5'
The ball has barely left the home side's half since the first whistle. The visitors have started excellently, spreading the ball well and making it hard for Shakhtar to get their bearings.
3'
NEARLY THE OPENER! Ronaldo sprints to latch onto a great Modric pass, but he can't keep his finish down! He holds his head in his hands, he knows that it was a splendid opportunity wasted.
1'
Off we go.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions League clash between Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Madrid. The visitors are already assured of a place in the last 16, but want to wrap up top spot just to be sure. As for the hosts, they need a win to have any chance whatsoever of progressing.
Shakhtar currently sit in third place in Group A, four points of Paris Saint-Germain in second. A 4-0 win over Malmo last time out represented their only points in this section, after losing each of their first three games. Even a win here might not be enough for the Ukrainian side, as they will need PSG to slip up against Malmo.
However, if there ever was a time to face Real Madrid, it would be now. Los Blancos are still licking their wounds from their 4-0 Clasico humiliation by Barcelona at the Bernabeu, and there's been criticism of figures like Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafa Benitez from the fans. Madrid are already six points of the pace in the league, but can at least look to this competition to restore some pride.
Real Madrid beat Shakhtar 4-0 at the Bernabeu on the opening matchday of the group stages - surprisingly the only time these two teams have ever previously met in European competition. Los Blancos will be encouraged by the poor home form of the Ukrainians against Spanish teams. Shakhtar have lost four of their last five such matches.
Real Madrid (4-3-3): Casilla; Carvajal, Varane, Pepe, Nacho; Modric, Casemiro, Kovacic; Isco, Ronaldo, Bale.
Real Madrid subs: Navas, Kroos, Benzema, Rodriguez, Vazquez, Jese, Danilo.
Captain Darijo Srna and Oleksandr Kucher are suspended for the home team, giving Vasyl Kobin and Ivan Ordets starts. Mircea Lucescu also recalls Alex Teixeira to the team, and the playmaker will skipper the side tonight. Marcio Azevedo is also handed a place in the XI, with Taison on the bench.
Rafa Benitez, meanwhile, has made seven changes from the Clasico. Sergio Ramos and Marcelo are both injured, giving Pepe and Daniel Carvajal the chance to return to the team. Keylor Navas sits out this one from the start, handing the gloves to Kiko Casilla. Karim Benzema has also been sacrificed for Isco, meaning that Cristiano Ronaldo will lead the line - flanked by the Spaniard and Gareth Bale.
And that will do it for the first half from Ukraine, with Madrid holding a 1-0 advantage at the break. Ronaldo's 450th club career goal is the difference here, in a match that has struggled to really spark into life. Shakhtar need to win to have any chance of progressing, but have not shown enough that they deserve such a result. Stay tuned for the restart in just a bit.
Madrid show plenty of residual damage after the loss against Barcelona, coming extremely close to surrendering a 4-0 lead against Shakhtar. The Ukrainians scored thrice in the last 13 minutes, but could not complete the comeback and exit the Champions League. Madrid seal top spot in Group A, but they are far from the most convincing team in the knockout stages. That's all from us, see you next time!
