Both sides had very contrasting fortunes in their respective domestic matches over the weekend. In the Spanish Primera Division, newly promoted Alaves shocked Barcelona with a surprise 2-1 win on Saturday evening. This clash was preceded by the return of the biggest fixture in Scottish football as Celtic hosted arch rivals, Rangers, in the league for the first time since 2012, and went on to blow them away in a comprehensive 5-1 win.
Celtic, meanwhile, return to the tournament group stage for the first time in three years, with Brendan Rodgers getting the Hoops back to the big time at the first attempt since being appointed as head coach during the summer. With Barca, Manchester City, and Borussia Monchengladbach featuring alongside the Glasgow side in Group C, it will certainly be no easy task to try and make an impact on their return to the competition.
Having won the Champions League for the fifth time two years ago, the Catalan giants failed to defend their title last year in what was a very disappointing European campaign for Luis Enrique and his superstar charges. The Cules were dumped out of the competition at the quarter-final stage by domestic rivals Atletico Madrid, who would go on to lose the final on penalties to Real Madrid at the San Siro in Milan.
That's right, Europe's premier club competition is back and tonight's featured fixture on Matchday One sees the Spanish champions, Barcelona, take on the Scottish champions, Celtic, at the Camp Nou.
