Toure and Mee battle for the ball near the corner flag on the right wing before the City midfield comes out on top and wins the home side a throw-in in a dangerous position. 8'
Iheanacho goes close! Yaya Toure finds himself in a pocket of space in the middle of the pitch and charges forward before teeing up Iheanacho. Great goalkeeping by Tom Heaton! A terrible pass from Ben Mee can only find Sterling, who immediately tees up Kelechi Iheanacho. And we're off! City get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Manchester City and Burnley at the Etihad Stadium.
After winning all of their opening six games of the campaign, a misfiring City side have failed to find the consistency needed to keep up with high-flying Chelsea. As a result, Pep Guardiola’s men not only sit 10 points behind the league leaders after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Liverpool, but now also lie outside of the top four for the first time this season.
Despite the lacklustre defeat at Anfield, City will feel confident about their chances of bouncing back with a much-needed victory here today. Burnley have struggled on the road this season, resulting in them picking up only one point from a possible 24. City, meanwhile, have lost just once at the Etihad since the end of March, with only Chelsea managing to beat them on home turf during that time.
A thumping 4-1 win against Sunderland on Saturday sent Burnley up to 11th place and nine points clear of the relegation zone, highlighting just how impressive they’ve been at home this season. The Clarets head to Manchester searching for a third win in a row, but, with four defeats from as many away games, today’s clash could prove to be another tough one for Sean Dyche’s men.
City were victorious in the last meeting between the two sides back in November, with Sergio Aguero scoring both of his side’s goals to cancel out Dean Marney’s stunning opener. The Argentine striker was unable to mark his return from suspension with a goal against Liverpool and has, surprisingly, been left on the substitutes’ bench today, with Kelechi Iheanacho instead being handed his fifth start of the season.
Pep Guardiola has decided to make four changes to the City side that started the defeat against Liverpool on New Year’s Eve, with the most notable inclusion being Kelechi Iheanacho, who is preferred to Sergio Aguero up front. Meanwhile, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Jesus Navas also come into the starting line-up to replace Pablo Zabaleta, John Stones and David Silva, respectively.
Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche has made two alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Dean Marney and Steven Defour making way for Jeff Hendrick and Johann Berg Gudmundsson.
The two sides are making their way out on to the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-0 BURNLEY
Boos ring around the stadium as the two teams make their way off the pitch, and it's no wonder why. It's been a frustrating first half for City, who not only find themselves a man down due to a terrible challenge from Fernandinho but have also failed to cause too many problems for Burnley's back line. Iheanacho hasn't been able to test Heaton as much as he would have liked, whilst Sterling and Navas have largely been ineffective out wide.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 2-1 BURNLEY
They were made to work hard, but, in the end, City were just about to leave with three much-needed points. They were given a mountain to climb when Fernandinho saw red for a terrible two-footed challenge, but Silva and, in particular, Aguero made a huge impact after coming off the substitutes' bench and helped guide their side to a hard-fought victory.
