We're off! Chile get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Confederations Cup group stage game between Cameroon and Chile at the Otkrytiye Arena.
Group B gets underway with a clash between two sides that, despite managing to win the Africa Cup of Nations and Copa America, respectively, are in danger of not featuring at next year’s World Cup if their performances don’t improve. For Cameroon, it’s been a particularly disappointing qualifying campaign, with draws against Zambia and Algeria leaving them in second place in their group, four points behind leaders Nigeria.
A failure to qualify would be only the second time that has happened since 1986, but this year’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Gabon showed just how strong Cameroon are when they’re at their best. They beat Egypt 2-1 in the final to win the competition for the first time since 2002, but they had no such luck against Colombia in their last outing, as the South American side thrashed them 4-0 in Tuesday’s friendly.
As for Chile, they currently sit in the final of the four automatic qualification spots in their World Cup qualifying group, but Argentina lie just one point behind them with only four games left to play. La Roja comfortably beat Venezuela in March but haven’t performed as well in their subsequent friendly games, with Romania managing to get the better of them after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Russia last week.
The two sides have only met one another on one other occasion, and what an occasion it was! A fiery encounter in Nantes at the 1998 World Cup resulted in a 1-1 draw that sent Chile through to the knockout stage of the competition, but not before Cameroon had got both Rigobert Song and Lauren sent off.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Hugo Broos has decided to make nine changes to the Cameroon side that started the defeat against Colombia, with only Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Benjamin Moukandjo retaining their places in a heavily altered starting line-up.
Meanwhile, Chile boss Juan Antonio Pizzi has made six alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Mauricio Isla, Jean Beausejour, Gonzalo Jara, Jose Fuenzalida, Arturo Vidal and Edson Puch coming into the starting line-up to replace Paulo Diaz, Enzo Roco, Eugenio Mena, Felipe Gutierrez, Leonardo Valencia and Alexis Sanchez, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: CAMEROON 0-0 CHILE
Well, what an end to the first half that was! Chile, who have easily been the better of the two sides so far, looked to have finally broken the deadlock only for VAR to come to Cameroon's rescue. It looked as if Vargas may have been half an inch offside, and it's a decision that has sent the Chile players into a frenzy as they head down the tunnel. Vidal looks particularly angry at the officials.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: CAMEROON 0-2 CHILE
An exciting and event-filled game saw Chile find themselves on the receiving end of two VAR decisions, and, in the end, they just about had enough to see off Cameroon. They impressed in the first half before dropping off slightly after the break, but Vidal and Vargas were on hand in the final 10 minutes to make sure they left with all three points.
