West Ham get us underway! kicking right to left.
Tottenham continued their impressive start to the Premier League season after they dismantled Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side at Wembley. They were helped by some woeful defending from their opponents but it does not take away from the fact that they were dominant throughout and are finally starting to make their temporary stadium a home pitch no side will want to visit.
Spurs are unbeaten in their last 11 fixtures across all competitions and, in the form they are in, they would be widely expected to make that 12 tonight. Mauricio Pochettino will likely rotate his squad ahead of their trip to Old Trafford at the weekend, with left-back Danny Rose expected to start after returning from a knee injury.
Goalkeeper Adrian is expected to continue in goal ahead of Joe Hart for the EFL Cup competition. Striker Andy Carroll will be available after serving a one-match ban but striker Diafra Sakho, defender James Collins and midfielder Michail Antonio are all expected to miss out.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
West Ham Substitutes: Fonte, Arnautovic, Obiang, Hernandez, Haksabanovic, Hart, Masuaku.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s EFL Cup Fourth Round game between Tottenham and West Ham at the Wembley Stadium.
West Ham come into the tie under immense pressure on both the manager and the players to get a positive result. Slaven Bilic’s side were beaten 3-0 by Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend, leaving them above the relegation zone by only goal difference and they are in need of at least a good performance tonight.
West Ham XI (3-4-2-1): Adrian; Ogbonna, Rice, Kouyate; Byram, Noble, Fernandes, Cresswell; Ayew, Lanzini; Carroll.
As expected, Pochettino rings the changes for this game ahead of the weekend tie with Manchester United. Lloris, Sanchez, Eriksen, Aurier and Kane are replaced by Michel Vorm, Juan Foyth, Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Fernando Llorente respectively.
Tottenham XI (3-5-2): Vorm; Foyth, Alderweireld, Davies; Trippier, Sissoko, Dier, Alli, Rose; Llorente, Son.
Tottenham Substitutes: Sanchez, Nkoudou, Dembele, Gazzaniga, Eriksen, Winks, Walker-Peters.
West Ham also make wholesale changes to the side that lost 3-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion. Adrian replaces Hart in goal, with Cheikhou Kouyate and Manuel Lanzini being the only players to retain their place in the starting line-up for this tie.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM 2-0 WEST HAM
A relatively uneventful first half in what has been a very tame affair between the two sides. Tottenham produced the only moments of any real quality in the game, starting with the counter-attack that allowed Sissoko to slot Tottenham into the lead. A brilliant cross towards the back post should have doubled that lead but Adrian showed brilliant reactions to parry out Alli's header. There was nothing the Spaniard could do for Alli's goal however as it took a wicked deflection to flight into the corner of the goal. A fully deserved lead from Tottenham though and West Ham have a mountain to climb if they are to rescue this tie.
The players are back out on the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM 2-3 WEST HAM
A brilliant second half performance from Slaven Bilic's West Ham and a well deserved result. This will do wonders for their confidence after what has been a struggling Premier League campaign so far and they were the far better side after looking down and out at the half-time whistle. Andre Ayew's double inspired the fight-back from the away side before Ogbonna rose highest at the near post to flick home Lanzini's corner. Exceptional comeback from West Ham and the pressure will be alleviated from Bilic and his players for the time being.
