We're underway at the Bernabeu.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Real Madrid and Villarreal at the Bernabeu.
Villarreal sit sixth in the table and are unbeaten in their last three league matches, although they were knocked out of the Copa del Rey during the week by Leganes on away goals. Javi Calleja's men have beaten Celta Vigo and Valencia in their last two away matches, so they will carry a threat against Madrid this afternoon.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Navas; Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo; Kroos, Casemiro, Modric; Bale, Isco, Ronaldo.
Real Madrid subs: Vallejo, Kiko Casilla, Hernandez, Vazquez, Asensio, Mayoral, Kovacic.
Zidane makes one change from the side that drew Celta Vigo after making several alterations to his team for their draw during the week against Numancia in the Copa del Rey. Daniel Carvajal returns from suspension and replaces Achraf Hakimi at right-back, while Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Isco continue as the three-man frontline.
Villarreal have made two changes to their side from the team that drew against Deportivo La Coruna last time out in LaLiga. Trigueros comes into the side to replace Enes Unal, while Daniele Bonera replaces the suspended Victor Ruiz. Pablo Fornals joins Dani Raba and Carlos Bacca to form a three-man attack. The visitors are still without Roberto Soriano, Bruno and Nicola Sansone
STAT ATTACK! Villarreal have not won any of their 17 league visits to Santiago Bernabeu (D5 L12), but they have avoided defeat in two of the last three (L1).
STAT ATTACK! Real Madrid have only won two of their last five games against Villarreal in La Liga (D2 L1), both wins coming under Zinédine Zidane (3-0 at Bernabeu in April 2016 and 3-2 at La Ceramica in February 2017).
Real Madrid are close to desperation stakes in their bid to defend their LaLiga crown. Zinedine Zidane's men are 16 points behind Barcelona at the top of the table, although they do have a game in hand on their Clasico rivals. However, Los Blancos drew 2-2 last time out in LaLiga against Celta Vigo, leaving them unable to bounce back from their hammering in El Clasico in their last home outing. A victory is a must for Madrid this afternoon.
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-0 VILLARREAL.
It's an all too familiar feeling of frustration for Real Madrid after 45 minutes of action against Villarreal. The home side have been knocking on the door and have come close to breaking the deadlock through Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo, but it remains goalless at the break. Zinedine Zidane's men could well have had two penalties for a shove on Ronaldo and a handball against Alvaro Gonzalez, but the referee has turned away both appeals. They will have to up the ante in the second half to get the crucial opening goal.
FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-1 VILLARREAL
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Villarreal pull off a fantastic result as Pablo Fornals' late strike hands them the three points against Real Madrid. It's another poor outing from Los Blancos as their defeat surely ends any of hope of successfully defending their LaLiga crown. Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo were guilty of missing chances in the first half, while they were denied two decent claims for a penalties by the referee. However, their second-half performances was dreadful, failing to force the issue. They were hit on the counter by a fine goal by the visitors, who deserve the victory for their resilience and clinical edge. The pressure on Zinedine Zidane will only grow after this display.
