We're underway at King Abdullah Sports City.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the SuperClasico de las Americas match between Argentina and Brazil at King Abdullah Sports City.
Two of the giants of South American football meet in the SuperClasico of the Americas, the annual match between Argentina and Brazil. The Albiceleste won the contest last year in Melbourne thanks to a goal from Gabriel Mercado, although Brazil have edged the contest winning three of the four meetings since its inception in 2011.
Argentina warmed up for the clash this evening with a comfortable win over Iraq last week. Lautaro Martínez, Roberto Pereyra, German Pezzella and Franco Cervi found the back of the net. Lionel Scaloni will be looking for a positive result even without Lionel Messi along with a number of his other star men, which could enhance his claim to secure the head coach position on a permanent basis.
Let's take a look at the two teams, starting with Argentina.
Brazil defeated Saudi Arabia in their friendly match last week. Alex Sandro and Gabriel Jesus. Tite's men have won all three matches since their exit from the 2018 World Cup, beating the United States, El Salvador and Saudi Arabia in the contests. This will be their first major test since their underwhelming defeat in Russia and they will be determined to see off their rivals.
ARGENTINA (4-3-3): Sergio Romero; Renzo Saravia, Nicolas Otamendi, German Pezzella, Nicolas Tagliafico; Giovani Lo Celso, Rodrigo Battaglia, Leandro Paredes; Paulo Dybala, Mauro Icardi, Angel Correa.
Argentina subs: Walter Kannemann, Fabricio Bustos, Roberto Pereyra, Marcos Acuna, Ramiro Funes Mori, Maximiliano Meza, Santiago Ascacibar, Eduardo Salvio, Giovanni Simeone, Geronimo Rulli, Franco Cervi, Lautaro Martinez.
BRAZIL (4-3-3): Alisson, Danilo, Marquinhos, Miranda, Filipe Luis; Arthur, Casemiro, Philippe Coutinho; Gabriel Jesus, Roberto Firmino, Neymar.
Brazil subs: Eder Militao, Alex Sandro, Richarlison, Renato Augusto, Pablo, Fabinho, Walace, Fred, Malcom, Lucas Moura, Phelipe, Ederson.
Both managers will want to see more from their sides in the second half. Tite will be disappointed given that this is his starting front three that they've not been able to trouble Argentina more at the back. Without Lionel Messi there's an opportunity for Paulo Dybala and Mauro Icardi to prove that they can be the main men for their side. An interesting second period awaits.
It's goalless at the break between Argentina and Brazil in Jeddah in a half of few chances. Brazil had the best opening of the first period when Miranda saw his close-range strike cleared off the line by Nicolas Otamendi. At the other end Paulo Dybala fired a free-kick narrowly wide of the post. Other than that it has been largely underwhelming in the final third considering the talent on display.
Next on the agenda for both teams are friendly matches in November. Brazil play Uruguay, while Argentina face off against Mexico.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
