On the other side of the ledger, Australia are also yet to hit top gear. After suffering a first up shock loss to Jordan, the Socceroos recovered to finish second in Group B. They couldn't find a winner through 120 minutes against Uzbekistan and find themselves in the quarter finals only thanks to some Mat Ryan heroics in the penalty shootout. Australia will need to step up a gear in front of a parochial UAE crowd if they are to keep alive hopes of defending their title.
The road to the quarter finals has not been an easy one for the host nation. With just a win and two draws in the group stages, the UAE narrowly finished at the top of Group A. They then had to battle deep into their Round of 16 clash against Kyrgyzstan advancing only on the back of a penalty in extra time.
