Hello and welcome to LIVE coverage of this Champions League Group G clash between RB Leipzig and Benfica!
RB Leipzig are two points clear at the Group G summit after winning three of their four matches, which means a draw in this clash will secure them a Champions League last-16 spot for the first time in their history. Julian Nagelsmann’s side enter the match in a rich vein of form after claiming five straight victories in all competitions, during which time they have scored a total of 24 goals.
Benfica have tasted success in just one of their four Champions League matches so far this season, but they are still in with a chance of last-16 qualification if they claim back-to-back victories in their remaining games. This means a defeat to RB Leipzig would be very damaging for Bruno Lage’s side who will be targeting a Europa League spot at the very least, but they do head into tonight’s clash having won their last eight league matches.
RB LEIPZIG (4-4-2): Peter Gulacsi; Lukas Klostermann, Ethan Ampadu, Dayot Upamecano, Marcelo Saracchi; Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer, Diego Demme, Emil Forsberg; Christopher Nkunku, Timo Werner.
SUBS: Tomas Tavares, Fiorentino Luis, Caio, Ivan Zlobin, Raul de Tomas, Jota, Jardel.
BENFICA (4-4-2): Odisseas Vlachodimos; Andre Almeida, Ruben Dias, Ferro, Alejandro Grimaldo; Pizzi, Gabriel Pires, Adel Taarabt, Franco Cervi; Carlos Vinicius, Chiquinho.
The players are emerging from the tunnel and we are almost ready for kick-off!
RB Leipzig have created some good opportunities to get back into the game, but Nagelsmann will be hoping his side can turn their possession into more attempts on goal after the break. The hosts have completed almost twice as many passes as their opponents, but have only had one more shot on goal than them. Meanwhile, Benfica have largely defended well and also managed to make the most of their major first-half opportunity.
The players are now gathering in the tunnel ahead of the start of the second half.
That's all for now. Thank you for following live coverage of this Champions League clash!
RB Leipzig will now be brimming with confidence heading into their Bundesliga clash with Paderborn at the weekend, while they can then seal their place at the top of Group G when they face Lyon next month. Meanwhile, Benfica need a head-to-head swing and victory against Zenit to avoid finishing bottom. First, Lage's side must prepare for a league match against Maritimo this week.
