Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the Premier League clash between Brighton and Hove Albion and Aston Villa.
Winless in their first five matches under new manager Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton have won back-to-back games against Chelsea and Wolves. In seventh place, a third successive Premier League win for the first time since 2018 would see them move into fifth, one point above Manchester United who face Fulham later today. The home side were also successful during the week, beating Premier League leaders Arsenal in the EFL Cup.
New Villa boss Unai Emery got off to a flying start, beating Manchester United at Villa Park in their previous Premier League match. Visiting Old Trafford just four days later in the EFL Cup, Erik ten Hag got the better of the Spaniard, with his side coming back from behind on two occasions to win 4-2. Winless away from home this season, a victory for Villa would see them move from 15th to 12th.
BRIGHTON SUBS: Jason Steele, Deniz Undav, Tariq Lamptey, Jan-Paul van Hecke, Joel Veltman, Ed Turns, Julio Enciso, Evan Ferguson, Billy Gilmour.
BRIGHTON (4-2-3-1): Robert Sanchez; Pascal Gross, Levi Colwill, Lewis Dunk, Pervis Estupinan; Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo; Solly March, Adam Lallana, Leandro Trossard; Danny Welbeck.
ASTON VILLA SUBS: Ludwig Augustinsson, Jan Bednarek, Leon Bailey, Ashley Young, Calum Chambers, Cameron Archer, Robin Olsen, Morgan Sanson, Leander Dendoncker.
ASTON VILLA (4-3-3): Emiliano Martinez; Matthew Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne; Boubacar Kamara, Douglas Luiz, John McGinn; Jacob Ramsey, Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia.
The scores are level at the break after Ings’ penalty cancelled out Mac Allister’s opener. It took less than a minute for the home side to take the lead, with Martinez at fault. Looking for Luiz, the Argentine’s short pass was latched onto by his compatriot, who took the ball away from the Villa midfielder and tucked it into the net from close range. With the game end-to-end, Emery's team broke Brighton’s resistance from the penalty spot. Running onto Kamara’s throughball, McGinn got a touch on it before being taken down by Dunk. Taking it off of Digne, Ings took responsibility for the spot-kick, shooting down the middle of the goal. Gross and Luiz could have given their respective sides the lead straight from a corner, but Martinez and Sanchez were there to push it away.
The only two shots on target so far have been the goals. Despite Brighton keeping the ball well for most of the half, they have struggled to get inside Villa’s box. Crosses have flashed across the opposition box, but they do not have a striker that is there to smell the opportunity. Having taken eight corners, they must do more with their set-pieces. The away side have looked more threatening, with the attacking trio of Ramsay, Ings and Buendia countering at pace, but the conclusion is similar. They have lacked product, and like Brighton, they have only scored due to the opposition making a mistake.
Ings scored twice as Villa came from behind to beat Brighton and secure their first away victory of the season. Their torrid run on the road looked set to continue when they conceded inside a minute. Martinez was at fault, gifting the ball to Mac Allister who shrugged off Luiz before shooting past his compatriot. Growing into the game, Villa then levelled the score from the spot. Kamara found McGinn in the box, who took one touch before being tripped by Dunk. Ings gave himself the responsibility of scoring, taking the ball off Digne before firing it into the bottom corner. The former Southampton man then doubled his tally in the second half to give Villa the lead. Swapping fortunes, Luiz robbed Mac Allister of possession before sliding it towards Ings. Rolling past Dunk, the forward’s deflected strike beat Sanchez. Struggling in the attack, the home side should have equalised in the 89th-minute. Getting on the end of Mac Allister’s cross, Colwill was unmarked in the box but couldn’t hit the target from close range.
That's all for today. Goodbye.
After the World Cup, Brighton travel to Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup, with Villa hosting Liverpool.
