Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the Supercopa de Espana semi-final between Real Madrid and Valencia.
Real Madrid have a brilliant record in the Supercopa, winning it for the 11th time last season. They qualified for the competition after winning the league and Los Blanos have only lost one of their last seven Super Cup matches. Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost some momentum following a 2-1 defeat to Villarreal in their last match, but this will be a good opportunity to get back to winning ways.
Valencia will be looking to win the Super Cup for the first time since the 1999/2000 season where they beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in the final. This is their sixth time participating in the cup, with their last appearance coming against the same opponents at the same stage. They reached this round after coming runners-up in the Copa del Rey last season, losing to Real Betis on penalties. Gennaro Gattuso’s side are not on the best of form, winning just three of their last 10 competitive games.
Valencia are really struggling to defend not only the wider areas but the lofted balls over the top of their defence. They are holding a high line to try and win possession further up the pitch but it is causing more problems than solutions at the moment.
With both teams already losing players to injury in this game, this would've been the last thing both managers wanted. Neither side will want this to go to a shootout.
Gattuso and the Valencia players will be thanking Mamardashvili at the half-time break that they are still in this game. He pulled off a great save to stop Vinicius early on in the half before another good diving save to Kroos' long range effort out. Valencia have not been great going forward on the counter-attack so far in extra time.
Samuel Lino's early goal in the second half is enough to take the game into extra time. Lato picked the midfielder out with a great cross and Courtois could not do much to stop the attempt. The second period was fairly even from there on in but Real Madrid missed two huge chances to win the game. Benzema failed to hit the target with his header before Vinicius's close-range attempt was stopped by Mamardashvili to extend the game.
Real Madrid certainly look more likely to win this game but they haven't been clinical at all. Valencia are still a danger on the counter-attack due to the pace they possess.
FULL TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 VALENCIA (REAL MADRID WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES)
Benzema gave Real Madrid a deserved lead from the penalty spot in the first half. He drew the foul himself after teasing Comert into a clumsy challenge. Valencia then caught their opponents off guard at the start of the second half when Samuel Lino scored within a minute to level the match. Los Blancos pushed for a winner but Mamardashvili made five saves throughout the match to give Valencia a chance. In extra time, Real Madrid continued to apply pressure on the Valencia goal, but the goalkeeper was once again able to stop good efforts from Vinicius and Kroos. Perez then had the chance to give Valencia a late win but Courtois did well to stop the shot. Real Madrid scored all four of their penalties but Valencia missed two of theirs. Comert skied his over the bar before Gaya's tame penalty was saved by Courtois, sending Real Madrid into the finals.
GOALLL!! Modric gives Real Madrid the advantage in the shootout! Modric goes for the bottom right corner, Mamardashvili gets a touch to the ball but cannot keep it out.
GOALLL!! Kroos puts Real Madrid back into the lead with a good finish into the bottom corner.
GOALL!! Moriba calmly scores for Valencia as he waits for Courtois to dive before rolling the ball in the other direction!
GOALLL!! Guillamon stutters in his run-up before placing the ball into the roof of the net to equalise.
SAVE!!! Courtois saves Gaya’s tame penalty to give Real Madrid the win on penalties!
GOALLLL!! Asensio sends Mamardashvili the wrong way to pile the pressure on Valencia.
COURTOIS SAVES! Real Madrid are through to the Supercopa finals after Courtois saves Gaya's soft penalty!
The best chance of the second period of extra time fell to Valencia. Moriba played a perfectly-weighted pass to get Perez one-on-one with Courtois. The goalkeeper did well to spread himself and make a save from point-blank range. Real Madrid struggled to break Valencia down in the second half and will be disappointed with how they played.
GOALLL!!! Cavani begins the shootout with a good penalty into the bottom right corner. Courtois dives the wrong way.
Real Madrid have a lot of great penalty takers on the pitch with Benzema, Modric, Kroos and Vinicius all confident. However, Mamardashvili has been excellent in this match and will back himself to make the difference.
GOALLL!! Benzema equalises for Real Madrid as he goes the opposite way he did earlier in the game. Mamardashvili once again fails to read the striker.
MISSED! Comert tries to find the top left corner with his penalty but blazes his effort over the bar!
