Now Schurrle is offside as he and Sane attempt to launch a final attack. It looks as though just the one goal will separate these two sides.
90' +2
You'd never guess this was a friendly! Germany are trying to keep the ball in the corner, while the fans whistle towards the referee in hope of the final whistle. It's been a long time since they've beaten England at home...
90' +1
BLOCK! Sane is denied by Cahill's block, with the England man then conceding a corner with a tackle on the same man. There will be three minutes of added time.
90'
Now England have the ball, but Germany are keeping them pegged back. Will there be one last chance?
Rashford and Lingard link up, the ball spinning up in the air, but it won't quite drop for Rashford in the area.
89'
A slightly uncertain start for Shaw as he fails to control and slows an England attack. Lingard is fouled, though, and the visitors can keep pushing.
88'
BLOCK! Stones gets in the way of Schurrle's shot to help it wide. That was close to a second. Corner...
Kroos' set-piece picks out Hummels, but his tame header drops wide.
87'
Germany repeat the trick of a few minutes earlier, keeping the ball and then dashing forward through Muller. Hector cannot find space to shoot.
85'
CHANGE! And England's last switch: Smalling for John Stones.
The show goes on for Germany, without Podolski. Sane crosses from the right, but Muller cannot turn a volley past Hart, instead looping the ball up in the air.
84'
S. Rudy enters the game and replaces Ł. Podolski.
J. Stones enters the game and replaces C. Smalling.
CHANGE! A huge, huge ovation for Podolski as he makes his final bow. Sebastian Rudy comes on.
83'
J. Ward-Prowse enters the game and replaces J. Livermore.
L. Shaw enters the game and replaces R. Bertrand.
CHANGE! Debut for James Ward-Prowse, who replaces Livermore.
CHANGE! Bertrand is off, too, with Luke Shaw on.
Minute
Description
82'
After a long, long passing move, with seemingly no intention of actually attacking, Germany come forward. Sane is offside, though, from Muller's pass, as he prepares to shoot.
80'
Germany are just happy to keep the ball right now. Kroos and Hector, in particular, are repeatedly trading passes on the left as England struggle to win the ball back.
79'
England keep the pressure on, but are perhaps a little unfortunate to see their efforts cut short as Dier jumps for the ball and apparently fouls his man.
78'
BLOCK! Rashford forces a corner from Hummels on the right, with Ter Stegen less than convincing from the set-piece. Lingard has space to shoot, but cannot get the ball out from under his feet and eventually blasts at a nearby defender.
77'
T. Müller enters the game and replaces T. Werner.
CHANGE! Werner's debut comes to an end as Thomas Muller comes on.
76'
England come forward, with Lingard knocking the ball wide for Bertrand. However, the wing-back is offside and the move quickly comes to an end. Frustration for the visitors.
75'
England's rhythm has, understandably, been disrupted by the goal and the changes. Germany are enjoying themselves now and look the more likely to score again.
73'
Rashford shows his own change of pace, turning Hummels on the right, and then hammers a low cross in towards the near post. Ter Stegen is there, spilling the ball and then diving on it.
SAVE! Superb from Hart! Keane, previously so excellent, slips and lets Sane in. The Germany winger looks certain to score, but Hart gets down to make a sublime one-handed stop.
72'
The mood has lifted around the stadium, along with the noise levels, following that goal. Germany are back on the attack again, too.
71'
J. Lingard enters the game and replaces D. Alli.
CHANGE! Alli, too, is withdrawn for Jesse Lingard.
70'
M. Rashford enters the game and replaces J. Vardy.
CHANGE! Saving legs for Sunday? Vardy is off for Marcus Rashford.
69'
Ł. Podolski has scored a goal for Germany! Assist by A. Schürrle.
Kroos pushed the pass into Schurrle, whose lay-off created the space for Podolski's hammer.
GOAL! Oh yes, of course it's Podolski! What a beauty this is. It had scarcely looked like arriving, but the man of the moment finds his range with a stunning drive into the top-right corner. Hart had absolutely no chance. 1-0.
68'
Germany's options in possession are somewhat limited as England press high. Finally, they move the ball through midfield to create an attack...
67'
Dier lofts a pass in behind for Vardy, but the England forward cannot quite bring the ball under control after escaping Rudiger's attentions.
66'
E. Can enters the game and replaces J. Weigl.
N. Redmond enters the game and replaces A. Lallana.
CHANGE! Another debut as Nathan Redmond replaces Lallana.
CHANGE! Weigl makes way for Emre Can.
65'
Schurrle is down after a clash with Cahill and the Germany fans are screaming for England to pass the ball out. Rather predictably, as Hart obliges, Schurrle is back on his feet.
64'
Ter Stegen has it as Keane leaps for the original corner and then Alli's second cross, but both times the headed effort lacks direction.
63'
Corner! Alli spreads a lovely ball for Walker, who, in turn, slips a pass inside for Lallana. The midfielder is quickly closed down.
62'
Every time England lose the ball, they're working to win it back. They have done so successfully time and time again, continuing their move now.
61'
Hart enjoys waving at the ball as it passes, Schurrle cutting inside from the left to shape a shot comfortably wide of the far corner.
Vardy loves to run! A hopeful hoof from England is Rudiger's ball, but pressure from Vardy forces a throw-in and England are on the attack.
59'
A. Schürrle enters the game and replaces J. Brandt.
Corner to England after Walker races down the right to send a deflected cross behind...
CHANGE! Andre Schurrle replaces Brandt.
BLOCK! Smalling flicks the corner on for Alli at the back post, but a German defender blocks well. A second delivery is cleared.
57'
Vardy is a real nuisance in attack. Alli's flicks, meanwhile, have the Germany defence second-guessing every movement. Alli nudges the ball on to Vardy, but he cannot quite pick out Dier on the right.
56'
Sane is enjoying himself rather more on the left in this second half, but angles his header, from Kimmich's deep, deep cross, only into the hands of Hart.
55'
SAVE! England's break includes Lallana, Alli, Dier and Vardy, with Dier the man to muscle through the Germany box and drive at goal from the right. Ter Stegen saves well, with Vardy following in ready to tap into an open goal.
54'
SAVE! A similar opening at the other end, as Kroos picks out Podolski, and while the prodded shot is on target, it's easy for Hart.
England survive as Podolski hammers another shot in to win a corner. It's cleared and England can break. The game is flowing from end to end now!
53'
CHANCE! Vardy shows that pace again! Sane can't get the ball out of his feet in the England area and the visitors counter. One long ball is enough to set Vardy away and his cross is deflected for Alli, who cannot turn a volley on target.
52'
Really smart from Germany. Dier and Vardy press the home side, but some measured passing and smart movement allows them to play it out from the back.
51'
The delivery from Bertrand is poor, however. Cleared easily. Walker helps Lallana out at the back after a poor pass and Germany cannot counter.
Now, though, England have a corner as Rudiger nods behind under pressure from Vardy...
50'
Vardy's a little isolated at the start of this half. Alli and Lallana don't quite have the same pace as the front man and have had a bit of a hard time getting close to him.
49'
It's been one of the stories of the season, given his trials at club level, and Hart has struggled with his feet today. Germany are pressing him hard and he's sliced a couple of clearances straight back to the hosts.
48'
Walker tackles Sane on the Germany left, but the ball gets away from the defender. Corner...
CLOSE! Hart punches the ball straight out to Brandt, who thrashes back goalwards, missing the bottom-left corner by a yard. A let-off for England, a first real opportunity for Germany.
47'
England have already settled again, passing the ball around at the back. There's an opportunity for them to land yet another impressive result in Germany today. The hosts were off the pace in the first half.
46'
KICK-OFF: No changes. Germany get us back under way.
45' +1
HALF-TIME: Germany 0-0 England.
45'
Germany are ending the half with some territory, at least. Livermore's clearance goes straight up in the air, Cahill's header landing on a German toe and they build again. Weigl, finally, shoots a long way wide.
43'
England's full-backs have impressed in this system, Walker taking Bertrand's overhit cross and darting inside to deliver himself. Germany deflect the ball away and Walker gives up a goal-kick.
42'
CLOSE! Looking to make immediate amends, Alli runs onto Lallana's flick and rattles a bouncing strike just over the crossbar from around 30 yards.
41'
SAVE! Huge save from Ter Stegen! Huge chance for Alli! Bertrand wins the ball in a dangerous area and Vardy pokes it beyond Hummels to give Alli a one-on-one. Ter Stegen stands up, though, and the England man blasts the ball straight at him. That should have been the opener.
40'
CLOSE! Dier steps up, having scored a free-kick against Russia at the Euros, but he curls over the top.
39'
More smart play from Alli! He nudges the ball past Rudiger to win a free-kick right on the edge of the area...
38'
Alli loves a dummy! Leaving the ball for Vardy, the England man creates shooting space for Lallana, who hammers the ball into an advancing defender.
37'
CHANCE! Podolski, once again, tries his luck! This was his best opening yet, in space on the edge of the box, but he lashes over the top.
Nervy moments for both goalkeepers! Hart, chased down at one end, escapes with a rather fortunate turn, before Ter Stegen similarly dallies and gets away with it.
36'
Brandt enjoys some possession on the left wing, profiting on Cahill's misreading of a long ball and then Livermore's hashed clearance. Eventually delivering, Cahill blocks and England get the ball away.
35'
It's England's turn to look a little sloppy on halfway. Bertrand's pass to Cahill is poor, leaving Smalling to clear wildly. Germany get possession, switch the ball and cross on the left. Keane, who has impressed so far, clears up.
33'
England are hitting their stride now. Alli skips by a man on the right with a lovely piece of skill, but Germany have numbers back. The hosts have yet to really show anything going forward.
32'
Germany immediately respond with an attack at the other end, coming forward on the left. Dier and Keane combine to snuff out the danger, though.
31'
POST! Oh so close for Lallana! He's scored in his last three internationals and was granted the opportunity to extend that run when a poor Kimmich pass allowed him to break from halfway. Lallana had the legs to reach the box and then rolled a shot agonisingly against the upright with Ter Stegen beaten.
30'
Weigl is now back on the pitch. It appeared as though he had fouled Dier, but seemingly came off worse.
29'
Hector gets a clearing pass wrong, allowing Livermore to pick the ball up. Walker's low delivery is just about cleared and Livermore then can't pick out Lallana. It's all England, though.
28'
Meanwhile, Julian Weigl, having been clattered by Dier, is currently down and in need of treatment.
27'
More promising signs for England! Keane delivers a lovely pass in behind for Alli to cross, with Rudiger diving to head the ball clear.
26'
SAVE! This is easy pickings for Ter Stegen, but Dier fancies another goal in Germany! He meets the set-piece, in a similar position to his winner in Berlin, but can only direct a header straight into the goalkeeper's arms.
25'
Corner for England. Walker gets the opportunity to run again, from Vardy's pass, and forces the ball out, via Hector.
23'
What energy from Walker! Cahill wins the ball to prompt an attack and a ball to the right side of the area is kept in on the byline by the marauding Walker, but his cross escapes Lallana as he brings it down.
22'
The passing is slack from both sides right now. A poor ball out of the England defence falls for Werner, but he attempts to pick out Sane and smashes out of play.
21'
Germany push up to force England to move the ball quicker at the back and, eventually, win it in their own half to start an attack. Julian Brandt chases down the right, but Smalling is too quick and too strong for the winger.
19'
Keane blocks again! Toni Kroos is the latest to fancy his chances, having scored from range in this clash last year, but his shot is easily dealt with.
18'
Mats Hummels' long ball is nodded down by Kimmich for Sane, who looks to push a pass back into the full-back and run beyond. He can only find the gloves of Hart, though, as Kimmich misreads his team-mate's intentions.
17'
England have the speed to cause problems on the break, but, as they come forward this time, Lallana looks for Alli, not Vardy, and he's crowded out.
16'
BLOCK! Podolski again! This time the ball falls kindly for him and he catches it sweetly. The thump travelled just five yards, though, before Keane bravely blocked.
15'
Germany have made a mess of this! Vardy and Alli link up, with a nice dummy from the latter, but the home defence eases back possession. However, two overhit passes cause Ter Stegen to rush from his goal to prevent a corner. It's been a slow start.
14'
Now Livermore is back in defence. Jonas Hector looks to create from the left for the hosts, but a timely interception allows the ball to run back to Hart.
13'
England are still pressing high, though. They win the ball back and Livermore is able to cross from the right, but Antonio Rudiger is up ahead of Vardy to nod clear.
11'
Podolski fancies a parting gift and attempts a shot from fully 25 yards, off balance and wide to the left. His tame effort is easily blocked by Smalling, but Germany are building some momentum at last.
10'
Both sides are missing key men for this clash, but England have adapted better so far. A new formation, too, don't forget, so Southgate will be encouraged by the opening 10 minutes from his side.
9'
After a good start, England are a little pedestrian at the back as Smalling takes his time to pass the ball back to Joe Hart. Werner harries and wins a throw-in as Hart slices out of play.
8'
CHANCE! What a start that would have been for Keane! Ryan Bertrand's low corner reaches the England defender in the middle and he lashes over the top. He might have done better there.
Livermore's made a good start here on his return to the side. He's linked up well with both wing-backs, but this time Bertrand's cross is too strong for Vardy in the middle.
7'
APPEAL! Vardy goes over as he runs onto Alli's pass and is challenged by Ter Stegen. There were only muted appeals for a penalty, but another delivery towards Vardy forces a corner...
5'
Now Germany have the ball as Leroy Sane pinches possession from Walker. The ball is worked wide to Werner on the other flank, but, just like Walker at the other end, Joshua Kimmich does not read the pass and it's a goal-kick.
4'
Vardy gets a touch this time, flicking Livermore's pass back to the midfielder, but Dier then overruns the ball and Lallana concedes the foul. No chances as of yet.
3'
Adam Lallana and Kyle Walker link up on the right for England, but the latter doesn't quite read the intentions of the former and the pass runs out for a goal-kick.
2'
A first chance for Jamie Vardy to stretch his legs, looking to reach Chris Smalling's long ball, but Ter Stegen is there first. Germany haven't yet an opportunity to get a foot on the ball.
1'
KICK-OFF: England get us under way!
And England are pressing from the off. They lose the ball, but Dele Alli gives chase and wins a throw-in. The visitors are already making ground on the right.
Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of the international friendly between Germany and England from Borussia Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park!
This is Gareth Southgate's first match as England's permanent manager and what a place to start...
However, victory in today's game would, incredibly, be the first time England have won back-to-back matches against Germany since their 1966 World Cup final success. That historic triumph was the last in a run of seven consecutive wins in this fixture. The stakes are considerably lower this time, but Joachim Low and his men will not want another defeat.
Manuel Neuer pulled out of the Germany squad with injury, so Marc-Andre ter Stegen takes his place and Lukas Podolski, in his final international game, is captain. There's a debut, from the start, for Timo Werner. Sami Khedira's absence was confirmed earlier in the day.
Southgate, meanwhile, has selected a slightly interesting line-up, seemingly opting for a 3-4-3 formation. Michael Keane debuts in defence, while midfielder Jake Livermore is back four-and-a-half years after his only previous cap. England are also missing their skipper - Wayne Rooney was not called up - meaning Gary Cahill wears the armband, just as he did last March.
Ahead of this game, Southgate told the media: "I have to balance what is right for Wednesday and what is right for Sunday as well." England play Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday, which appears to have played into the manager's thinking with this experimental team.
The former Middlesbrough boss was unbeaten in his four games in temporary charge of his country, but the performances were a little uncertain. England clung to a goalless draw away to Slovenia, then conceded two late goals as they were held by Spain. Southgate will hope for improvement, starting here...
The teams are in the tunnel, with kick-off just a few minutes away. Werner and Keane are not the only debutants today, incidentally, as England sport a new navy change strip.
And here come the players! Dortmund's yellow wall does not look very yellow at all without the thousands of BVB shirts, scarves and flags, but there's a typically brilliant Germany display at that end of the stadium.
With Podolski's international career winding to an end here, there's currently a video of some of his Germany highlights being played on the big screen. The national anthems will soon follow and we'll be ready to get under way.
Podolski is now addressing the crowd, who have been fervently chanting his name, and we're still waiting on the anthems...
At last! The anthems are done and dusted. Kick-off is just moments away.
Southgate will have enjoyed that half somewhat more than Low, with England largely dominant. They've packed numbers in defence when needs be, but broken well and pressed Germany at the right times.
Bertrand and Vardy created a fine opening for Alli, who shot straight at Ter Stegen, while Lallana had earlier pounced on a mistake to run clear and strike the post. In competitive action, those chances need to go in for England.
Germany have shown very, very little. Podolski appears determined to go out with a bang, but his numerous attempts so far have caused more worry to Smalling, Keane and the crowd than Hart and his goal.
The players are on their way back out. We'll soon learn if there are to be any changes at the start of this second half...
Germany, of course, are the world champions, but England beat them in the sides' last meeting, in 2016, as they came from two goals down to triumph in Berlin. Including that clash, the Three Lions have won their previous three away games against Germany.
It was all about Podolski today, in his final international appearance. He smashed a stunning winner halfway through the second half and England rarely threatened to equalise.
This was a promising display for Southgate's side, though, with England earlier dominant and hitting the post through Lallana. Alli also missed a big chance.
That's all from Germany. Thanks for joining us. Until next time, goodbye!
Victory is Germany's, though, and the two sides will now be focused on their World Cup qualifiers. England host Lithuania, while Germany travel to Azerbaijan.
