Hello and welcome to our LIVE text commentary of tonight’s international friendly between Russia and Spain at the Krestovsky Stadium.
The home side will hope to improve after their 1-0 defeat against Argentina in Moscow, whilst Spain will aim to carry on their fine form after an impressive 5-0 victory over Costa Rica on Saturday.
As the countdown to the World Cup continues, excitement is building in Russia as they prepare to host the prestigious tournament in 2018. Tonight’s friendly offers a stern test for Stanislav Cherchesov’s men, whilst providing them with an indication of how far they could potentially progress next summer by playing against a high-quality Spanish side. They nearly drew against Argentina on Saturday, but a late Sergio Aguero goal secured a 1-0 victory for Jorge Sampaoli’s team.
After securing their place in Russia via an unbeaten qualifying campaign, which included an impressive 3-0 victory over Italy, Julen Lopetegui’s Spanish side will enter the World Cup as one of the favourites for the tournament. It was always going to be difficult to follow three consecutive major trophy wins as La Roja experienced early exits from tournaments in 2014 and 2016, but they appear to be back to their best. A 5-0 victory over Costa Rica on the weekend made it 15 matches unbeaten for the manager who was appointed in July 2016.
This is the first time the two sides have met since the European Championships in 2008, where Spain eventually went on to win the tournament. A David Villa hat-trick secured a 4-1 victory against tonight’s hosts, but Russia still managed to come second in Group D to secure a place in the knockout stages.
After a remarkable run from Russia, they faced Spain once again in the Semi-Finals of the tournament. It was yet another comfortable victory for La Roja, however, as they secured their place in the final with a 3-0 victory.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick off, so let’s reveal how the two teams line up…
Russia have made five changes to the side who lost to Argentina. Andrey Lunev, Igor Smolnikov, Yuri Zhirkov, Alan Dzagoev and Aleksey Miranchuk are brought in for tonight’s match.
Tonight’s away side have also made five changes from Saturday with David De Gea, Nacho, Marco Asensio, Suso and Rodrigo coming into the side. Sergio Ramos and Andres Iniesta also start this evening, who remarkably played in Spain’s last encounter against Russia at Euro 2008.
The teams walk out of the tunnel to an incredible atmosphere inside the Krestovsky Stadium, a ground which newly opened earlier this year in Saint Petersburg. The game will get underway shortly after both national anthems.
FULL-TIME - RUSSIA 3-3 SPAIN - What a fantastic friendly between two sides who gave everything in this contest. Spain's early pressure was rewarded after Jordi Alba gave them the lead, before Sergio Ramos doubled it from the penalty spot shortly afterwards. Russia already looked out of the match, but Fedor Smolov gave them a lifeline on the stroke of half time after he scored his first goal of the game. The hosts levelled the scoreline six minutes into the second half after Aleksey Miranchuk finished from close range. Their celebrations were short lived, however, as moments later Sergio Ramos was brought down in the box for yet another penalty which he converted to retain Spain's lead. But the drama did not end there thanks to Fedor Smolov, who scored his second goal of the game after his fantastic strike from outside the 18-yard box found the top left-hand corner to secure a 3-3 draw for Russia.
Thank you for joining our Live Text Commentary between Russia and Spain this evening. If this 3-3 draw is an advert for what is to come in the World Cup, we should all start counting down the days to the tournament next summer! Until next time, goodbye.
HALF-TIME - RUSSIA 1-2 SPAIN - An entertaining first half comes to an end with the away side in front. Spain dominated the bulk of the first half and were rewarded as Jordi Alba gave them an early lead after his header found the net. They doubled the scoreline shortly after through Sergio Ramos from the penalty spot, after a deliberate handball from Kuzyaev. Moments later, Russia found themselves on the scoresheet after Fedor Smolov scored for the hosts on the stroke of half time to give them a lifeline ahead of the second period.
