Oscar and Essien have perhaps been Chelsea's biggest negatives, with both paying the price by being subsituted early. The hosts are still pressing, in the meantime, though they are not exactly displaying an abundance of urgency.
90' +4
It proved the right decision to play Mata, as well. The Spaniard has performed well today, while Terry and Cahill have shown real leadership qualities at the back - and in the Southampton penalty area.
90' +3
The Special One has worked his magic once again, it seems. 1-0 down, Mourinho brought Ba on as a second striker in the second half. And hey presto: his side are now 3-1 up.
90' +2
There are six minutes of added time - but that will not be as much of a prospect for the visitors as it was before Chelsea's third!
90'
D. Ba has scored a goal for Chelsea! Assist by Ramires.
Another shot from Osvaldo! Although, on this occasion, Lambert had made a good run into the box and was waiting for the pass.
GOALLL!! It is all over here - Ba has his first league goal of the season! A real striker's finish from the Senegalese after receiving the ball from Ramires and it is no less than he deserves. The same goes for the home side, who have been nothing but relentless in this second half.
89'
WIDE! Although Cech had his shot covered, Osvaldo just fired a little reminder that the visitors are capable of hitting back at any minute. The Italian forward's shot went wide.
88'
We may be in for an extended period of added time when the 90 minutes are up...
87'
Shaw bursts forward for the visitors, showing just why the hosts might be entitled to feel the nerves, but his cross is collected by Cech. Rodriguez was waiting at the other end of the box.
86'
Just four minutes remain plus injury time... The home fans will be the more nervous as things stand, as they - quite simply - have more to lose.
85'
D. Osvaldo gets yellow.
Minute
Description
84'
M. Obi enters the game and replaces Fernando Torres.
Fernando Torres' game is over after 84 minutes at Stamford Bridge. Despite the Spaniard not finding the net yet again, his performance has been effective nevertheless. He is no longer the laughing stock he once was in a Blue shirt.
83'
STAT ATTACK: Meanwhile, the two goals conceded by Southampton today are only their eighth and ninth in their last 11 away games.
82'
Torres wins a corner for Chelsea! The Blues are unbeaten in their last 15 home games and look like making it 16 here.
81'
The visitors look tired, though you cannot fault them for their efforts so far today.
80'
Osvaldo now has a good opportunity for the visitors - but he dallies on the ball and his hesitance leads to a breakdown in the attack.
79'
Could there be hope for Ba and Torres as a strike partnership?
78'
Ba is played in once again but slips on the edge of the penalty area. The ball comes into the path of Lampard via Torres, however, though the England man's shot goes straight into the goalkeeper's arms.
77'
Just 13 minutes remain. Can Southampton get back into this or will Mourinho's men keep this momentum up?
75'
As things stand, it is Chelsea who will now move into second. Manchester City have just scored their third goal against Swansea so they will move into third. Liverpool, who lost at Hull City earlier today, will stay in the top four but only on goal difference.
74'
CHANCE!! It is Ba with another chance to kill the game off for Chelsea. He takes a good touch and forces himself into a dangerous position. His shot is on target but cannot beat Gazzaniga. You cannot help but feel that Ba could really stake a claim for a first-team place here.
73'
BOOKED! Goalscorer Rodriguez enter's the referee's book now. Frustration for the visitors?
72'
J. Rodríguez gets yellow.
71'
However, it could have been game, set and match just then. Mata tried to dink the ball through but Gazzaniga intervened well.
70'
The home side have edged possession thus far - but only just. The away side are still very much in this.
69'
Ramires breaks into the penalty area after cutting in from the left-hand side! But Shaw is there to clear. Chelsea have not been able to break the visitors down via traditional channels. They have had to wait for a corner and then a wonder-cross from Mata.
68'
The Saints have now made all three of their available substitutions. Could Lambert prove a game-changer for them?
67'
R. Lambert enters the game and replaces M. Schneiderlin.
66'
OFFSIDE! Ba takes a fantastic touch to control the ball in midair! He is in the six-yard box... But, again, a good defensive line from Southampton means the Senegalese is caught offside.
65'
M. Schneiderlin gets yellow.
And how interesting that Chelsea's goals have come from Cahill and Terry - their centre-backs. Cahill attempts another header this time but is not so lucky.
64'
The onus is most certainly on the hosts now, however. What a half it has been for the Blues!
63'
S. Davis enters the game and replaces J. Ward-Prowse.
So this is the turnaround many may have ben expecting. Can Southampton now turn the tide? They were superb in the first half and are only a goal down...
62'
J. Terry has scored a goal for Chelsea! Assist by Mata.
GOAL! TERRY! Well, well, well. A Mata delivery and a Terry header. Where have we seen that before? A superb ball from the Spaniard caps Chelsea's latest venture into the Southampton half and their veteran skipper leaps magnificently to head home. 2-1.
61'
Ba has provided them with extra an presence in the Southampton half. Who says there is no place for a 4-4-2 anymore?
60'
Chelsea have begun to press high up the field now and look a different side from the first half - full of confidence.
58'
P. Gazzaniga enters the game and replaces A. Boruc.
And Boruc's afternoon gets even worse. The goalkeeper was involved in a collision and will have to make way for Paulo Gazzaniga. A shame for Southampton, he has been superb today.
57'
So Mourinho's side have clawed their way back into this. Now will they push on for the winner?
55'
G. Cahill has scored a goal for Chelsea!
GOAL! Gary Cahill equalises for the Blues! Lampard's free kick had been tipped over by Boruc - but the Poland goalkeeper will feel hard done by. From the resultant corner, the ball becomes loose in the box and Cahill pounces first to tap home from short range.
54'
FREE KICK! Chelsea win a free kick in an attacking position, with Mata and Lampard standing over it. Is this the chance they have longed for?
53'
A. Lallana gets yellow.
52'
The hosts have been rather careless since the break, though a firm challenge from Terry this time wins possession back.
51'
More effective defending from the Saints as they hold an organised line and the offside flag is raised against Chelsea.
50'
Osvaldo now breaks into the Southampton half to start a move that is continued by Shaw and Ward-Prowse. The attack peters out, however, and it is Chelsea's turn to clear the danger.
49'
Schneiderlin is caught in possession by Ramires and the ball is played forward to Torres. Clyne intervenes, however, clearing the ball out of play. More solid defending.
47'
That change is an attacking one from Mourinho, with Ba joining Torres up front to give the Blues two up top.
46'
D. Ba enters the game and replaces M. Essien.
The second half is underway at Stamford Bridge! Chelsea get us restarted.
Demba Ba has come on to replace Michael Essien.
45' +4
Last-ditch attempts by Torres and Mata to break forward - but Lovren is there once again. What a rock he has been at the back so far this season.
45' +3
What a fantastic tactical display this has been from Southampton. Can they keep this up in the second half?
45' +2
Mata tries to beat his man but cannot get past the first defender...
45' +1
There will be FOUR minutes of added time. Still time for another first-half goal here.
45'
Chelsea will certainly need to bring more to the table after half-time if they are to break this Southampton back line. But Mourinho will probably be sure to tell them that at the break...
44'
SAVE! Boruc produces yet another superb stop!! The Polish shot stopper this time denies Torres. Can anyone beat Boruc at his best?
43'
The big question before today was whether Pochettino's side would come at the hosts or sit back and park the bus. They have opted for the former and it has worked very effectively thus far.
42'
F. Lampard enters the game and replaces Oscar.
EARLY CHANGE! Mourinho has had enough, it seems. On comes Frank Lampard for Oscar.
41'
SAVE! Fantastic work from Torres now as the home side fashion a chance out of the blue. The Spaniard plays in Oscar and the Brazilian then once again has a header saved by Boruc!
40'
GREAT RUN! Wanyama and Schneiderlin are having a great day for Southampton so far... But so too is Shaw! And the Under-21 international just broke deep into the Chelsea half, almost playing in Lallana. Could a second be on its way for the visitors?
37'
It is worth remembering that Mourinho has never lost a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge. Could today be a historic day?
36'
COUNTER! Osvaldo and Rodriguez initially link up for the visitors but Oscar catches a loose ball and surges into the Southampton half. He is stopped by a strong challenge, however, and now requires some treatment while he is down.
35'
GREAT DELIVERY! Ward-Prowse strikes again from a dead-ball situation, sending a dangerous free kick into the box that causes real confusion! The Blues fail to clear their lines initially but deal with the danger after some hesitation. That man is causing all sorts of trouble, though.
34'
Chelsea have, of course, been a goal down to both Cardiff and Norwich City this season, going on to win both of those games. Can Mourinho make the necessary changes to turn this one around?
33'
M. Essien gets yellow.
Lallana now breaks forward and puts the likes of Terry and Cahill under pressure. The home side get it back but Essien meets some trouble and ends up being booked for diving!
32'
Although the hosts are becoming more and more lively, one does wonder if Southampton can hold on here.
31'
SAVE! Boruc comes to the rescue once more as Mata delivers another good ball into the area, this time from a free kick. Gary Cahill and Terry were both rising to meet it, though the Saints goalkeeper got there first.
29'
Another offside is now given but the headline act there was a great cross from Mata. The Spaniard delivered an irresistible ball into Essien, though the flag was once again raised.
28'
GREAT DEFENDING! Luke Shaw loses the ball and Branislav Ivanovic pounces for the home side! But Dejan Lovren intervenes wonderfully, dispossessing the Chelsea defender but also avoiding a corner.
27'
OFFSIDE! Hazard makes a superb forward run and shifts the ball out to Ramires, with the Brazilian in turn playing the ball to fellow countryman Oscar - who was in a great position! The offside flag was raised, though, with Oscar missing his ensuing shot anyway...
26'
ROW Z! Ward-Prowse it is who delivers the set-piece but his shot goes into the stands. The England Under-21 international has certainly hit better.
25'
FOUL! Ramires commits a poor challenge 25 yards away from goal. Could this be Ward-Prowse territory? Or will Lallana curl it into the area...
23'
The Brazilian has definitely been a lively presence, however, and he moves forward with the ball once again, prompting the Saints defence into action.
22'
HEADER! Oscar tries to trouble Boruc again! But his header floats outwards without any danger...
21'
Jose Fonte is now pressurised into giving another throw away by Eden Hazard. Great initiative from the Belgian.
20'
Cesar Azpilicueta now gives the ball away with a poor pass through to Essien and Southampton look to capitalise. But Adam Lallana cannot keep James Ward-Prowse's pass in play and the ball rolls off for a throw-in.
19'
CORNER! Clyne clears the ball away for a corner and Oscar then forces a save from Boruc! The Blues are definitely piling the pressure on now, while the crowd have also responded to the switch in momentum.
18'
As things stand, Manchester City would move up to second, with Southampton - amazingly - in third. Chelsea would still be in the top four despite this scoreline, though they would have dropped a place.
17'
CHANCE! Oscar plays a great ball into the area and if flashes past the Southampton goal. The offside flag is raised against Terry, however.
16'
Southampton are doing very well to ensure Chelsea do not dominate possession here.
14'
Thankfully, there is no repeat of his "skills" at Arsenal.
13'
Morgan Schneiderlin and Nathaniel Clyne now exchange passes but the ball is lost and reaches Petr Cech. Still, it is the visitors who wrestle possession back. The ball then reaches the opposite goalkeeper and Artur Boruc is almost brought back painful memories of a couple of weeks ago when he is found on the ball in his own box.
12'
It has not been the best day for London sides so far, has it?
11'
News has also come through that Fulham have sacked Martin Jol, with Rene Meulensteen taking over first-team affairs.
10'
Victor Wanyama loses the ball to Torres and the Chelsea midfield break away, with Mata and Oscar exchanging passes for an extended period - perhaps the first time they have done so today. The move breaks down when the Spaniard curls a ball through and it goes off for a goal kick.
9'
News also reaches us from Manchester City, who have taken the lead against Swansea City. Bad news for Chelsea - but Southampton could still go second.
8'
The Chelsea midfield attempt to feed in Fernando Torres, who makes a forward run, but the Southampton defence deal with it with some more terrific pressing.
7'
Chelsea have yet to offer any concrete chances in response to that early goal, except for that corner early on. Interestingly, the hosts are backing off Southampton more than the other way around.
5'
We saw a big upset earlier on when Hull City beat Liverpool - will we see another one here? The crowd have been stunned into silence and it is clear for all to see that Southampton will be sticking with their usual pressing game at Stamford Bridge.
3'
Chelsea win a corner now but John Terry cannot do much with it when the ball is whipped in. How will the Blues respond to this disastrous opening?
2'
So what an amazing start. Mourinho does not look happy - but Pochettino certainly does. This is not what Chelsea would have had in mind pre-match...
1'
J. Rodríguez has scored a goal for Southampton!
Kick-off and Southampton start us off.
GOALL!! Southampton score after 13 seconds - and it's Jay Rodriguez!! Barely do Chelsea have time to breathe when the England forward pounces on a mistake from Essien, before calmly slotting the ball past Petr Cech.
Good afternoon and welcome to live-text coverage of Chelsea against Southampton!
I'm your host Tim Poole and I'll be guiding you through another Premier League encounter that will no doubt provide us with the highs and lows we have come to expect from such a thrilling division.
Mourinho's side have moved up, of course, because of Liverpool's 3-1 defeat at Hull City earlier today. Tottenham and Manchester United also drew 2-2, so there is plenty of incentive for both sides to go all out for the win this afternoon.
The hosts will be lining up like this: Cech; Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Terry; Ramires, Oscar, Essien, Mata, Hazard; Torres. Substitutes: Schwarzer, Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Schurrle, Ba, Willian.
It will be interesting to see how Juan Mata and Michael Essien cope with rare starts under Mourinho. Will Mata prove his quality against Mauricio Pochettino's side?
Kick-off is just a minute away... Stay with us!
Today's clash at Stamford Bridge sees Jose Mourinho's Chelsea take on this season's undoubted surprise package in Southampton. Without kicking a ball, Chelsea have moved up to second in the table, while Southampton are seventh - but could leapfrog the Blues with a win.
So Dani Osvaldo starts for the Saints, while Rickie Lambert can only make the bench.
And speaking of Pochettino, here is his selected line-up: Boruc; Clyne, Shaw, Lovren, Fonte; Schneiderlin, Ward-Prowse, Wanyama, Lallana; Rodriguez, Osvaldo. Substitutes: Yoshida, Lambert, Davis, Cork, Chambers, Gazzaniga, Hooiveld.
HALF-TIME: Chelsea 0-1 Southampton.
So it is Mauricio Pochettino's side who hold the lead at half-time. But after their exploits at Anfield and Old Trafford earlier in the season, can we really be surprised?
Jose Mourinho's side have been punished for the one mistake they made all half. Michael Essien erred and Jay Rodriguez pounced, giving Southampton the lead after an amazingly quick 13 seconds.
However, Southampton have most definitely been the better side so far. And if the home side do not come up with fresher ideas, we could be on course for another upset, with the Saints potentially moving up to third in the Premier League! Stay with us for the second half.
FULL-TIME: Chelsea 3-1 Southampton.
How different the full-time score looks to the half-time one!
A 13th-second opener from Jay Rodriguez handed the visitors a shock lead, which they carried through into half-time with a superb performance. However, Jose Mourinho responded after the break by bringing Demba Ba on - and the rest was history.
Gary Cahill scored the all-important equaliser for the Blues, while John Terry and Ba added the winning goals. Southampton will feel hard done by - but will certainly be encouraged by their performance nonetheless.
That wraps up our live-text commentary, we hope you enjoyed our coverage and look forward to bringing you more action in the near future. All the best!
