6'
Tottenham quickly win the ball back from the restart and Lamela flies forward before being fouled 25 yards away from the Anderlecht goal, resulting in a free kick in a very dangerous position. Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Europa League clash between Anderlecht and Tottenham Hotspur. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Stade Constant Vanden Stock.
It’s been an positive start to the Europa League for Tottenham, who head to Brussels top of Group J thanks to a win and a draw from their opening two games. They arguably should have two victories under their belts after only narrowly drawing against Monaco three weeks ago, but they will nonetheless be confident about picking up a second this evening. The clash is a repeat of the 1984 UEFA Cup final, which the Premier League side won 4-3 on penalties after drawing 2-2 on aggregate. If things go their way tonight then another win could send them three points clear of nearest challengers Qarabag, setting them up wonderfully for their final three group stage games.
A disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Qarabag means that Anderlecht currently sit bottom of the group with just one point, and their dreadful Europa League record continues to go on. The last time that the Belgian side won in Europe’s second-highest competition was way back in December 2011, whilst the last time that these two teams met it ended in a 1-1 draw. However, Besnik Hasi’s men have looked far better domestically and have lost just one of their last 11 league games, and they will be desperate to transfer that form to the European stage if they are to have any hope of progressing from what is proving to be a tough group.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening…
Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Dembele; Lamela, Eriksen, Townsend; N’Jie.
Tottenham Hotspur substitutes: Vorm, Wimmer, Rose, Onomah, Winks, Alli, Kane.
Besnik Hasi has decided to make just one change to the Anderlecht side that started the 4-0 thrashing of Zulte-Waregem on the weekend, with Youri Tielemans coming into the squad to replace Andy Najar.
Meanwhile, Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has made five alterations to the side that featured in the aforementioned draw against Liverpool, with the most notable inclusion being Clinton N’Jie, who starts ahead of Harry Kane due to the knock that the latter suffered on Saturday. Meanwhile, Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Dele Alli and Nacer Chadli all make way for Kieran Trippier, Ben Davies, Eric Dier and Andros Townsend, respectively.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: ANDERLECHT 1-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
It's been an incredibly evenly-fought opening 45 minutes, with both sides enjoying good chances in front of goal. Tottenham started the better of the two sides but quickly faded, allowing Anderlecht to come back and find an equaliser just nine minutes after Eriksen had found the back of the net. From then onwards, the hosts arguably looked the most impressive of the two teams but have struggled to beat Lloris, who looks in inspired form between the sticks.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: ANDERLECHT 2-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR
The referee blows his whistle for the final time and Anderlecht have held on to pick up an excellent win! They fully deserve it too after putting in a brilliant second-half performance to continuously frustrate Tottenham, who looked bereft of ideas whenever they were inside the final third of the pitch.
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing all of the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
