And we're off! Getafe get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s La Liga game between Real Madrid and Getafe at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
It’s been a difficult two weeks for Real Madrid, who were first thrashed in embarrassing fashion by arch rivals Barcelona before a sloppy error resulted in them fielding an ineligible player in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey victory against Cadiz. Denis Cheryshev played from the start, and scored the opening goal, in a 3-1 victory against the third-tier side, but it was quickly realised that he shouldn’t have been playing due to the three yellow cards he accumulated in last season’s competition whilst on loan at Villarreal. As a result, last night saw Los Blancos get chucked out of the tournament, piling further pressure on beleaguered boss Rafael Benitez.
Heading into today’s game, Benitez has been clear that the Spanish Football Federation’s decision has not been on his mind and that his sights are firmly set on a clash against a side that, on paper, they should comfortably beat. They could definitely do with the victory too, as back-to-back league defeats against Sevilla and Barcelona have left them sitting six points behind the latter side in third place, with their local rivals Atletico Madrid, who are in action against struggling Granada later this afternoon, lying two points in front.
It’s been almost three and a half years since Getafe last beat Real Madrid, but they will be hoping to take advantage of the off-the-field issues that are currently plaguing their opponents and turn them into what would be a shock win. Recent history doesn’t hold out much hope for them, however, as Los Blancos have comfortably won all of the last five meetings between the two sides, scoring a whopping 21 goals in the process. However, with so much pressure being exerted on the 32-time league champions, anything could happen…
Real Madrid substitutes: Casilla, Arbeloa, Llorente, Casemiro, Kovacic, Cheryshev, Jese.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Real Madrid XI (4-2-3-1): Navas; Vazquez, Pepe, Nacho, Danilo; Modric, Kroos; James Rodriguez, Bale, Ronaldo; Benzema.
Getafe substitutes: Megyeri, Vergini, Gomez, Yoda, Leon, Mensah, Scepovic.
Rafael Benitez has decided to make seven changes to the Real Madrid side that controversially won against Cadiz during the week, with only Pepe, Nacho, James Rodriguez and Lucas Vazquez keeping their places in a heavily-altered line-up that sees the club’s biggest stars return to the limelight.
Meanwhile, Getafe boss Fran Escriba has made 10 alterations to the side that featured in the 2-0 defeat against Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday, with Alexis being the only player to start both games.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 4-0 GETAFE
It's been an absolutely dominant performance from Real Madrid thus far, and that's exactly what they would have wanted after suffering such a disappointing two weeks. Getafe have barely managed to break out of their own half of the pitch and have failed to deal with the hosts' forward line, who have bullied them from start to finish. If they don't make any tactical changes soon, this could end up being an incredibly long afternoon for the visitors...
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
Getafe XI (4-2-3-1): Guaita; Suarez, Cala, Alexis, Lago; Wanderson, Lacen; Sarabia, Victor Rodriguez, Lafita; Alvaro Vazquez.
FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 4-1 GETAFE
In the end it was a comfortable victory for Real Madrid, who were easily able to see off their opponents thanks to a wonderful first-half performance. They took their foot off the pedal somewhat in the second period and were made to pay by Alexis, but that was the only negative in what will be largely seen as a positive result for the under-pressure title chasers.
