Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the FA Cup quarter-final clash between Millwall and Brighton and Hove Albion at The Den.
Millwall have developed a healthy habit of making deep surges into the later rounds of the FA Cup. They reached the final of the competition in the 2003/04 campaign before advancing to the semi-finals in the 2012/13 season. They also progressed to the last eight two years, highlighting their success despite remaining in the second and third tiers of English football. The Lions have defeated Hull City, Everton and AFC Wimbledon to reach this stage and will be eyeing their second Premier League scalp this term.
Brighton have progressed to the last eight for the second year on the bounce. Last season they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United, but the contest against Millwall offers them a real chance to progress to the semi-finals. The Seagulls have last advanced to the final four in the 1982/83 campaign when they were beaten finalists by United, suffering a loss on a replay at Wembley Stadium after drawing the first match 2-2. This term Brighton have beaten Bournemouth, West Brom and Derby, and although Millwall have struggled for form of late, it will be a challenge for the Premier League outfit.
MILLWALL (4-1-4-1): David Martin; Mahlon Romeo, Alex Pearce, Jake Cooper, Shane Ferguson; Ryan Leonard; Jed Wallace, Ryan Tunnicliffe, Shaun Williams, Aiden O'Brien; Lee Gregory.
SUBS: Conor McLaughlin, James Meredith, Shaun Hutchinson, Ben Amos, Tom Elliott, Shaun Morison, Jiri Skalak.
SUBS: Bruno, Gaetan Bong, Jurgen Locadia, Jose Izqueirdo, Solly March, David Button, Dan Burn.
BRIGHTON (4-3-3): Mat Ryan; Martin Montoya, Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk, Bernardo; Beram Kayal, Dale Stephens, Davy Propper; Anthony Knockaert. Glenn Murray, Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
Millwall have been combative in their approach and prevented Brighton from playing their natural game for the majority of the first half. However, the home side cannot afford to rest on their laurels and need to provide support for Gregory in the final third to force the issue.
Incredible scenes at the death as David Martin only needed to catch the ball to end the game. However, he missed it and allowed Solly March's free-kick to find the top corner. Millwall were on their way to Wembley for the semi-finals at 2-0 up, but Brighton have hit back, scoring twice in the dying minutes to send the game to extra-time.
Millwall need to regain their composure and go again, none more so than Martin. Brighton have a reprieve and have to capitalise.
It remains all square at the break at half-time extra-time at The Den. James Meredith had the best effort of the half, seeing his strike well saved by Mat Ryan. Brighton took command of the period, but were unable to force the issue. There 15 minutes left for the teams to avoid penalties.
There is yet more drama to come at The Den as the game goes to penalties. Millwall will have to play on without Shane Ferguson, who was rightfully dismissed for a stamp on the back of Lewis Dunk's leg. Brighton then saw a goal disallowed for offside, although Martin Montoya, who was the guilty part was in line with the last Millwall defender. The officiating has been inconsistent to say the least this afternoon.
OFF THE BAR! Murray strikes the crossbar with the first kick of the shootout. He goes for the top corner, but overhits his strike, clattering into the woodwork. 0-0.
Here we go for penalties. Murray is first up for the visitors.
Williams converts for the home side, dispatching his left-footed strike into the bottom corner. 1-0.
Locadia holds his nerve to get Brighton on the board, firing his effort into the net. 1-1.
Tunnicliffe goes for height with his effort, just getting his strike over Ryan into the net. 2-1.
March hammers his effort into the roof of the net to get his side back on level terms. 2-2.
Leonard is next up for Millwall. He smashes his effort past Ryan, who barely moves. 3-2.
Propper goes for power for the visitors, drilling his effort with height into the side of the net. 3-3.
Stephens fires his effort into the bottom corner, although it just trickles past the hand of Martin. 3-4.
MISS! Ryan gets Brighton back into the shootout. Romeo fires a tame effort towards the right-bottom corner and the Aussie gets down to make the stop. 3-3.
The pressure is on Morison to score, but he converts firing his effort high into the net. 4-4.
MISS! Cooper has to score to keep the shootout alive, but he clears the bar with his effort. Brighton advance to the last four.
Dunk is next up for Brighton. He holds his composure sending Martin the wrong way with a strike into the bottom corner. 4-5.
