Chelsea get this Group H tie underway! The first foul of the game goes Valencia's way as Kovacic handballs Cheryshev's attempted flick.
Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of this Group H clash between Chelsea and Valencia on Matchday 1 of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League group stage.
The qualifying rounds are over with, and this year's Champions League is now truly underway. Chelsea and Valencia make up a tantalising Group H with last year's semi-finalists Ajax and Lille, France's second best side who return to this stage for the first time since 2012-13.
Frank Lampard's young Chelsea side already have a taste for winning after their Europa League victory last season, while Valencia are looking to steady the ship under Albert Celades after former boss Marcelino's abrupt exit. This group looks wide open. Who'll be the frontrunners to go through? Let's find out!
CHELSEA (3-4-3): Kepa Arrizabalaga; Fikayo Tomori, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma; Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Marcos Alonso; Willian, Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount.
SUBS: Pedro, Marc Guehi, Michy Batshuayi, Christian Pulisic, Ross Barkley, Olivier Giroud, Willy Caballero.
VALENCIA (4-4-2): Jasper Cillessen; Daniel Wass, Ezequiel Garay, Gabriel Paulista, Jose Gaya; Geoffrey Kondogbia, Francis Coquelin, Daniel Parejo (c), Denis Cheryshev; Rodrigo Moreno, Kevin Gameiro.
The two sides walk out onto the Stamford Bridge pitch, and the iconic Champions League anthem rings out. It never fails to get the blood pumping, does it?
Valencia's win puts them second in a nascent Group H on goal difference behind Ajax, who beat Lille 3-0 in Amsterdam. Chelsea sit in third place and will have to go away and lick their wounds. They had the better of this game but couldn't create good enough chances to score.
Chelsea can't dwell on this one for long, as they host Liverpool this weekend. Nor should they - they played OK and there's still plenty of time for them to get out of the group. Valencia are off to a good start. Whatever happens, Group H is sure to be interesting. That's all for now. Goodbye!
